Marv Wolfman returns to Blade.

This is Comic Book Club News for August 22, 2023.

Marv Wolfman Heads Back To Blade:

Marv Wolfman, iconic co-creator of Blade, will be returning to the daywalker for a new one-shot, as part of Marvel’s Dark What If…? series. In the one-shot, which is subtitled The Tomb of Dracula, the titular vampire somehow turns Blade into a vampire. Yeah, I don’t get it, either.

Said Wolfman via press release: “In 1972 I was a fledgling comics writer who mostly wrote short 2 to 8 page ‘monster’ stories when Editor Roy Thomas asked if I’d like to write Tomb of Dracula, my very first series for Marvel, and the book that would jump-start my career. So it is a real thrill now that 50-plus years later Marvel asked me to once again dive into that pool with this very special What If…? story, and to bring back that great cast of characters that artist Gene Colan and I created so many years ago. Thank you, Marvel, for giving me the chance to play with old friends one last time.“

The one-shot will feature art by David Cutler and Scott Hanna, and will hit comic stores on November 8.

James Tynion Launches Christmas Horror Series:

Looks like Christmas is coming a little early this year, as Image Comics has announced a new horror series from James Tynion IV, featuring a murderous Santa Claus.

The Deviant is something a little different,” said Tynion via press release provided by Image. “A dark, focused psychological crime thriller where I get to explore the intersection of my queer identity and a broader scope of cultural transgression and deviance. This is my response to Silence of the Lambs and Jeffrey Dahmer serving as my first real glimpses of my queer identity as a young closeted Midwestern boy. It’s one of the darkest and most personal stories I’ve ever written. It’s also a story about Christmas.”

Along with art by Joshua Hixson, the series begins in Milwaukee in 1972 as a quote “blood-stained Santa Claus commits unimaginable atrocities against young men.” It then picks up 50 years later as a young writer interviews the so-called Deviant Killer.

The nine-issue miniseries will debut in comic book shops on November 15. And at one issue a month, should wrap up in July of 2024, meaning Christmas will also end pretty late next year.

Omnibus Snags Oni Press:

As comics apps scramble to fill the gaps left by market-dominant ComiXology, one prospective competitor is making some big moves. As announced today Omnibus has signed a deal to digitally distribute Oni Press titles

“It’s always incredibly exciting to bring one of the deepest and most revered libraries in comics to a new audience,” Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson said via press release. “Omnibus has ambitious plans for expanding the digital comics marketplace, and we’re glad to join them in efforts with a far-reaching array of beloved titles by some of the most influential creative voices that comics has to offer.”

Titles that will be available at launch include Scott Pilgrim, The Sixth Gun, and Adult Swim’s Rick & Morty line. One catch? Omnibus is currently only available for the iPad. However, the app’s Twitter feed promises additional platforms — and Oni Press titles — soon.

Remember: you can’t spell Omnibus without Oni.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And you also can’t spell Omnibus without “I’m bonus!” Don’t know what that means, just thought it was interesting.
