The Ultimates #1 Review:

In this new series, Tony Stark is assembling a team of heroes to try and stop The Maker once he returns… And he’s not doing a good job of it. Enter Ant-Man and The Wasp, who might be able to help.

“The continuity is wild here,” started host Justin Tyler. “I’m very curious now that we’ve sifted through a lot of the business… Moving out of this, I think is really exciting.”

Added Alex Zalben, “I was very surprised how much this leans into the multiverse of it all, to the point that they’re not just talking about but literally looking at the regular Marvel Universe… It’s surprising to me to see that so blatantly put out there.”

Zalben was also intrigued, given this clear view of the regular Marvel Universe, how this impacts Hank Pym — who knows he hits his wife, and doesn’t want to be that guy. “This is a very different feeling book than the other Ultimate books, and… that’s what I want out of this line, is something that doesn’t feel like something I’ve read before. This does not feel like the previous Ultimates. This does not feel like an Avengers book… I’m curious as to what happens next.”

On the other hand, Zalben noted that this Captain America very casually beheads a man with his shield, a la Falcon and the Winter Soldier. “It’s not quite ‘do you think this A stands for France’ levels with this Captain America, but I’m curious to see how he’s different.”

The Ultimates #1 Official Synopsis:

THE ULTIMATES RETURN TO GREATNESS! Spinning out of Jonathan Hickman and Stefano Caselli’s ULTIMATE UNIVERSE #1, rising stars Deniz Camp (CHILDREN OF THE VAULT, 20th Century Men) and Juan Frigeri (INVINCIBLE IRON MAN) assemble an all-new team of ULTIMATES in a series that kicks off the next chapter of the new Ultimate line. Six months ago, Tony Stark sent Peter Parker a radioactive spider to set him back on the course to become Spider-Man. Since then, Iron Lad (Stark), Captain America, Doom, Thor and Sif have begun to do the same for other lost heroes, building a network of super-powered heroes hungry for change… Now they must band together to destroy the Maker’s Council and restore freedom and free will to a world ruled from the shadows!
