Batman’s 85th Anniversary Celebrated This Week:

85 years ago, on March 30, 1939, Batman was born in Detective Comics #27. And to celebrate the anniversary, DC is going all out by putting 175 comics on sale, displays in stores, and more. Plus, and you’re not going to believe this, new Batman comics will be released in stores this week.

As reported by Bleeding Cool, the sale includes iconic Batman titles, as well as many other classic DC Comics issues. As long as retailers order 30 copies, they get a 10% discount and a Batman display stand celebrating the character’s anniversary.

This week also sees the release of new Batman-focused issues of DC Comics: Batman: The Dark Age #1, Batman: The Brave and the Bold #11, Detective Comics #1083, and The Penguin #8.

I think we can all agree this is some deserved focus on an underserved character who needs more time in the spotlight. Finally, a time we can all celebrate and read books about Batman.

Mark Millar Kicks Off Dark Horse Partnership With New Nemesis Title:

Mark Millar recently made waves for… Well, a lot of reasons. But one of them was moving his long-standing partnership with Image Comics, to Dark Horse Comics. And now we know the first new title coming from the Millarworld line to Dark Horse: a new Nemesis title, focusing on Millar’s Batman who wears white and curses.

Said Millar via press release: “I’ve read Dark Horse Comics since I was a teenager and am both excited and a little bit proud to be launching this massive wave of books with the guys. Kicking it all off with Nemesis just feels right as it’s been the most asked about character since our Big Game crossover concluded at Christmas.”

Titled Nemesis: Rogues’ Gallery, the new series adds artist Valerio Giangiordano, and kicks off after the Big Game crossover that mashed together all of Millar’s Millarworld characters: white-suit Batman, violent teenager, other, female violent teenager, not-James Bond, Eminem, and it threw in parody-law protected Batgirl for good measure. More amazing ideas from comics’ greatest idea man!

The new series finds Nemesis broken and bent on vengeance against those who wronged him. The first issue of the five-issue mini will hit on July 24, 2024.

Marvel Celebrates Daredevil’s 60th Anniversary:

Move over, Batman! This April, Daredevil celebrates his own anniversary. As announced by Marvel, Daredevil #8 will be an over-sized celebration of the Man Without Fear’s 60th anniversary, featuring multiple stories from teams key to the character’s history — and a new cover by legend Frank Miller, who is not related to Mark Millar.

Here’s what to expect from the issue. The main story is by Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, and continues the tale of Matt Murdock plagued by the Seven Deadly Sins. Then in a back-up, Ahmed teams up with artist Tommaso Bianchi for an Elektra story. Ann Nocenti and Stefano Rafaelle are tackling a flashback story set during Nocenti’s era on the title. Erica Schultz and Jan Bazaldua pen another Elektra story, set in current continuity. Elsa Sjunnerson and Erica Koda from Women of Marvel showcase Matt Murdock as an inspiration. D.G. Chichester and Ken Lashley go to the Back in Black era for a showdown with the Punisher. And Ty Templeton does some Daily Bugle funnies.

Plus there’s that Frank Miller cover, which looks great. Given a lot of classic artists have gotten flack lately for their covers — including Miller — it’s nice to see one we can all agree looks good.

The new issue will be released on April 17.
