What Happened To Rick In Invincible? What To Know About D.A. Sinclair

What happened to Rick in Invincible

Invincible is a pretty complicated TV show, full of interlocking plotlines, an expansive cast, and plenty of surprise returns. That includes Rick Sheridan, who popped back up in Season 2, Episode 6 “It’s Not That Simple” to throw an emotional wrench in the college storyline. But what happened to Rick in Invincible? And how does that tie into D.A. Sinclair?

It’s pretty straightforward, and they do explain most of what went on — or what you need to know — in the episode. But in the interest of being a helpful citizen of the internet, here’s what you need to know about the traumatic events Rick went through, and how it ties into the villain… Who we might not be done with quite yet.

What Happened To Rick In Invincible?

Rick Sheridan, voiced by Jonathan Groff in Invincible Season 1 and Luke Macfarlane in Invincible Season 2, is the boyfriend of William Clockwell (Andrew Rannells). He was first introduced, and last seen in Invincible Season 1, Episode 6, “You Look Kinda Dead.”

In that episode, Mark Grayson, aka Invincible (Steven Yeun), Amber Bennett (Zazie Beetz), and William head to Upstate University, where the latter strikes up a thing with Rick. While there, they check out a biology class taught by the haughty and mean professor D.A. Sinclair (voiced by Ezra Miller in Season 1, and Eric Bauza in Season 2).

While Sinclair is pretty bad in class and insults Rick, he’s even worth literally under the surface. He’s creating a race of cyborg super-soldiers called Reanimen, and experimenting on college students to perfect his designs. That includes Rick, who gets captured and ripped to shreds by Sinclair.

Invincible manages to rescue Rick — or rather, Rick breaks the mental control Sinclair has on him, and helps Invincible, but when we last saw him he was much worse for the wear. Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins) was taking him to the Global Defense Agency for recuperation.

How Is Rick Back Alive In Invincible Season 2?

Rick and William in Invincible season 2 Episode 6

In this week’s episode, Rick is back and alive but clearly traumatized by what happened to him. Yet he looks perfectly fine. How can this be? What is happening??

As they explain in the episode, Rick only has partial memories of his time as a Reanimen zombie. When William takes him and shows him a plaque on a fountain that he explains, “It commemorates D.A. Sinclair’s victims,” Rick can’t clearly remember anything of his time under the knife.

That’s by design. As Donald (Chris Diamantopoulos) explains, Rick is mostly a robot skeleton with a few pieces of him recovered. And Donald should know, because the same thing happened to him — as he discovered recently. So Rick has his body back, but not all of his mind. And he can’t really come to grips with the trauma, something that may reverberate throughout his relationship with William.

What Happened To D.A. Sinclair In Invincible?

So Invincible beat D.A. Sinclair. Good riddance, right? Absolutely wrong. As we saw in the final episode of Season 1, “Where I Really Come From,” Cecil isn’t one to waste a resource… Particularly when it’s caused so much damage to a Viltrumite, the alien race he’s trying to stop from taking over the Earth.

That includes Sinclair’s Reanimen, who the scientist is secretly building an army of somewhere for the GDA. While Sinclair might technically be using his powers for good, with so many characters having been tortured by the madman, it’s only a matter of time before the other shoe drops. Or limb.
