Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #1 Review:

In the first issue of this new miniseries, the world knows Ms. Marvel is a mutant — and it’s making things complicated with her return to her hometown of Jersey City.

Referring to the previous miniseries, host Alex Zalben noted, “That was a huge, pleasant surprise. Just because it got TV’s Ms. Marvel a lot it could have gone wrong, could have been a simple cash-in… This is great. This feels like the G. Willow Wilson run, a natural extension of that. They give Ms. Marvel a new problem… in terms of her powers spiraling wildly out of control.”

Justin Tyler loved the “twist at the end,” as well as the semi-villain who pops up in the issue. “The characterization is really great. It’s just amazing that Iman Vellani and Sabir Pirzada have come through and they feel like a steady hand at writing comics out of nowhere, and that’s very hard to do. So shouts to them because this stands alongside any Marvel comic — and is even better.”

“It does feel like a veteran team working on it, for sure,” Agreed Pete LePage. “I really liked this great art. Just such a fun vibe to it. I love the pace… I enjoy this team. It’s a great package.”

And beyond the generalities, Zalben also praised the team for the deeper themes present. “It’s really also paralleling the prejudice that the Marvel Universe currently and always has towards mutants with what is going on with Muslims at the same time, and showing some contrast there. So they’re delving into deeper stuff… Great book.”
