This is Comic Book Club News for February 27, 2024.

IDW Announces Five New TMNT Titles:

Yesterday, we bought you a slew of news from DC Comics out of ComicsPRO, the annual conference bringing together publishers and store owners for a no-holds-bar brawl to end them all. Or to discuss the future of the comic book industry. One of the two.

Today, we’re bringing you some non-DC Comics news, kicking things off with no less than five new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles titles announced by IDW. While the sequel to the perennial best-seller The Last Ronin is coming in March, and Jason Aaron’s relaunch of the title is coming in July, there’s more to come from the line as IDW celebrates 40 years of Turtles.

On May 8, IDW will drop the first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black, White, And Green, an anthology title that will only include the title colors. The initial slate of announced creators on the book includes Declan Shalvey, Paulina Ganucheau, Javier Rodriguez, and Jock.

Then in June, IDW releases the previously announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha. The front story by Tom Waltz will bring the current, 150-issue long run to a close. And the backup story will tee up Jason Aaron’s run, with a 10-page story drawn by Chris Burnham.

On June 12, IDW’s Saturday Morning Cartoon line, which throws back to classic ’80s toons, will expand with a one-shot titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo, which will draw Stan Sakai’s character in the style of the TMNT animated series.

Then in August, there’s a new ongoing series focusing on a mysterious main character. Titled TMNT: Nightwatcher, the title is written by Juni Ba with art by Fero Pe. Nightwatcher is an armored vigilante protecting mutants in the world of the Turtles, and it certainly looks like an armored turtle. But is it??

Last but not least is September’s TMNT: Mutant Nation, which explores the world alongside Aaron’s new title and comes from Tom Waltz, Sophie Campbell, and other creators TBA.

Jason Aaron Writing Uncle Scrooge And BRZRKR One-Shots:

Jason Aaron was surely the belle of the ball at this year’s ComicsPRO. But beyond the chatter about his TMNT run, there were two other big announcements of Jason Aaron books: Uncle Scrooge, and BRZRKR.

Sadly, this is not the team-up book we’ve all been waiting for. Instead, they were two different announcements: one from BOOM! Studios, the other from Marvel.

Let’s start with the one that makes more sense. BRZRKR: A Facefull of Bullets is another in BOOM!’s line of one-shots focusing on the Keanu Reeves character, this time placing him in a Western setting in the 1800s. With art by Francesco Manna, the June debuting issue will find B, the main character, caught between a land baron and his runaway daughter. Except lots of blood, guts, and gore.

Now, here’s the other announcement. In Uncle $crooge And The Infinity Dime, Scrooge will find his money bin stolen by an evil, alternate universe Uncle Scrooge. So he’ll team up with the regular crew of ducks, as well as multiversal versions of himself to stop the villainous quacker from becoming the all-powerful Scrooge-Above-All.

Said Aaron via a press release provided to Comic Book Club News: “As far as I’m concerned, there’s no disputing the fact that Uncle Scrooge is one of the absolute greatest characters in the history of comics. And I don’t just mean comics that feature talking animals. I mean all comics ever, bar none,. Uncle Scrooge’s rich, action-packed history includes some of the most exciting adventure comics ever created, by legendary creators like Carl Barks and Don Rosa. It’s one of the most mind-staggering thrills of my career to get to craft this epic cosmic adventure for the World’s Richest Duck, one that looks to honor the character’s legendary history while taking him to some wild, new, unexplored places in the way that only Marvel can deliver.”

The book will feature an array of Disney art talent, a cover by Alex Ross, and hit stores on June 19.

Marvel Must-Haves Hit Comics Shops For Free:

Rounding out our ComicsPRO announcements, Marvel is releasing three issues for free in comic book shops next month, as part of their new Marvel Must-Haves line. Whether you must have them or not, you won’t pay an infinity dime, so why not snag them?

According to Marvel: “These FREE issues collect multiple iconic issues that spotlight the Marvel characters and comic book series currently at the forefront of pop culture. These stories have been handpicked to get fans in-tune with current Marvel adventures, and act as perfect jumping on points for new readers too!”

The three issues are Spider-Man/Deadpool #1 from 2016, The Immortal Thor #2 from 2023, and Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1, also from 2023. Not so coincidentally, all three books have trade collections on sale, and the reason behind the Deadpool issue and Ms. Marvel issues are obvious, given the MCU of it all.

Why Immortal Thor #2, though? Pure speculation, but the first issue of that title included a bonus page from G.O.D.S. by Jonathan Hickman, so they probably didn’t want to pay that Hickman money, you know what I’m saying?

The issues will all hit stores on March 6.
