Cobra Commander #1 Review:

In the kick-off of this new miniseries, the future Cobra Commander is on the hunt for something. Spoilers here, but it turns out to be Megatron, who he has harvesting for parts for the greater glory of Cobra.

“First off, this is awesome,” said host Pete LePage. “This is absolutely what a fan wants… Also, this is gruesome… I’m very excited about the tone of this. I love what’s happening. I love how it’s happening. I love the timeframe that it’s happening in.”

LePage was also a fan of the issue’s final page reveal of the characters the Dreadnoks — something Alex Zalben took exception to. “That was something that didn’t work for me,” Zalben said, adding, “I really liked this. It’s a very horror-inflected take. It’s really delving into conspiracy theories, underground worlds showing a very different thing than we’re seeing in Duke, from what we’re seeing in Transformers… And I love all of these different tones that are building up to a mega-story. But since I don’t really know who the Dreadnoks are, leaving me off at that moment, I didn’t care; versus the rest of the issue made me care about something that I normally do not care about.”

Zalben more positively shouted out the art on the book, stating, “one of the real draws of the Energon Universe for me as somebody who would not naturally pick up a Transformers or G.I. Joe comic book, is the fact that the writing teams, the art teams, are firing on all cylinders here across the board.”

And Justin Tyler felt the book was “super interesting, diving into fantastical worlds… It’s really working, and I love this.”
