Marvel is roaring into the New Year with a slew of great-sounding comic books. That includes their ongoing series, of course. But also a bunch of big number ones, ranging from the official kick-off of the new Ultimate Universe, to the beginning of the end of the X-Men‘s Krakoa era. So without any more delay, let’s get into the 11 most-anticipated, must-buy, hottest Marvel Comics for January 2024.
1. Fall of the House of X #1
Release Date: January 3, 2024
The beginning of the end begins to end here! Or something. After four years, the X-Men’s Krakoa era, kicked off by Jonathan Hickman, is wrapping up with a pair of miniseries and a slew of spinoffs. Fall of the House of X by Gerry Duggan and Lucas Werneck depicts the mutants’ last ditch effort to destroy villains Orchis, and save their leader Cyclops. Spoiler alert: if the other series is any indication? They’re going to fail.
2. Vengeance of the Moon Knight #1
Release Date: January 3, 2024
Moon Knight is dead! Long live… Moon Knight? In one of the quickest resurrections in comics history, Marc Spector was killed off last month. Now, somebody is back in the Moon Knight costume. It’s a “new” title from the same writer and art team that handled the previous title, continuing the same story. Confused? That’s okay, all you need to know is they did a good job previously on Moon Knight, and presumably, that will continue.
3. Wolverine #41
Release Date: January 10, 2024
While the rest of the X-Men world is dealing with the end of the era, Wolverine is off doing his Wolverine thing, kicking off a 10-issue arc where Wolverine and Sabretooth settle their beef, once and for all. Marvel is promising the “most violent” Wolverine story ever told, which is a pretty high bar to vault over. But the team of Benjamin Percy, Cody Ziglar, Goeff Shaw, and Cory Smith can do it. I believe in you guys!
4. Rise of the Powers of X #1
Release Date: January 10, 2024
Remember how we mentioned two linked miniseries earlier? This is the other one, set 10 years after the X-Men lost their battle with Orchis. While the prior series looks like it will delve into action, this one — from Kieron Gillen and R.B. Silva — will continue the wild ideas Gillen has been building in Immortal X-Men and elsewhere, as the remaining mutants fight back against Dominion. What’s Dominion? Nothing big, just the end of the universe.
5. Ultimate Spider-Man #1
Release Date: January 10, 2024
Previously, Ultimate Spider-Man took the character back to his teens, then introduced Miles Morales. So what’s more “ultimate” than that? How about a middle-aged man who becomes Spider-Man? That’s the idea behind Jonathan Hickman and Marco Chechetto’s new title, which finds a thirtysomething Peter Parker married to Mary Jane, with two kids, suddenly getting Spider-powers. And I’m being glib, but there’s every chance this book will actually rule.
6. Miracleman By Gaiman And Buckingham: The Silver Age #7
Release Date: January 17, 2024
Only took over 30 years, but the story Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham started decades ago concludes in Miracleman: The Silver Age #7. It’s a wild comic book experiment, that is paying off with some deep storytelling and gorgeous Buckingham art. Now the only question is, with this long dormant story finally finishing up… What’s next?
7. Avengers: Twilight #1
Release Date: January 17, 2024
Not quite 30 years in the making, but definitely “a few years” in the making, Chip Zdarsky and Daniel Acuña’s new Avengers story is sort of a flip of the classic “The End” books Marvel did a few years back. Here, the world isn’t destroyed… It’s at peace, and Avengers aren’t needed anymore. Or, are they? Captain America sure thinks so. Zdarsky has been on a roll lately, so it’ll be interesting to see what he brings to this concept.
8. Cable #1
Release Date: January 17, 2024
Fabian Nicieza returns to Cable to write not one, but two Cables as the older dude teams up with his younger version to take out a tech nightmare. Most people are cutting the cord, but this book makes us want to sign up for double the cable. Oh, and if you’re curious: this is in-continuity, and part of the whole “end of Krakoa” storyline.
9. Power Pack: Into The Storm #1
Release Date: January 24, 2024
Coming off one of her strongest series in years (that would be Jean Grey), Louise Simonson reunites with June Bergman on a new, classic tale of Power Pack, the original kid superheroes. Plus Franklin Richards is along for the ride and that’s always a good time.
10. Avengers Inc. #5
Release Date: January 31, 2024
One of Marvel’s best new series comes to an abbreviated end this issue. But thankfully, the team of Al Ewing and Leonard Kirk had enough time to wrap up the ongoing mysteries of The Wasp, Hank Pym, and Victor Shade, aka the brain of The Vision in Whilrwind’s body. It’s a twisty mystery series that should have run for dozens of issues. But we’ll be thankful for the five we got.
11. Dead X-Men #1
Release Date: January 31, 2024
Probably the most evocative title of the month, this book takes Marvel’s revolving door of death and twists it on its side. The team of X-Men introduced — and promptly killed — at the Hellfire Gala return, somehow, despite mutants losing the power of resurrection. How and why do they return? I certainly will be reading to find out.
