Top 11 DC Comics For January 2024

Top DC Comics January 2024

You know how you make some resolutions on New Year’s but it still takes a bit to put them into action? That’s what’s going on at DC Comics in January 2024, as the publisher wraps up the Titans: Beast World crossover, which promises to tee up even bigger things in the future. Meanwhile, a lot is going on in the world of Superman — and that Batman guy has stuff going on, too. So let’s get into the 11 most anticipated titles for the month.

1. Kneel Before Zod #1

Kneel Before Zod #1 cover

Release Date: January 2, 2024

Zod flies into his first solo series from Joe Casey and Dan McDaid. And if you’re not familiar with the General’s current continuity, he’s a family man now: married to Ursa, with a son of his own. But, you know, still planning on conquering Earth and whatever. Should be a dark, interesting series.

2. Action Comics #1061

Action Comics #1061 cover

Release Date: January 9, 2024

Jason Aaron writes Superman for the first time! Not only that, it’s the kick-off of Superman Superstars, which finds all-star teams of creators taking their turn on Action Comics. Here, John Timms joins Aaron on art, and they’re telling a tale of Bizarro like you no am never seen him before.

3. Fables #161

Fables #161 cover

Release Date: January 9, 2024

There’s been a lot of ink spilled about the behind-the-scenes drama between creator Bill Willingham and DC Comics. But this is still the second to last issue of Fables, probably ever. While the new run hasn’t been as strong as the previous run on the title, you still have that great Mark Buckingham art. And hey, if you’ve already read 160 issues, why stop now?

4. Nightwing #110

Nightwing #110 cover

Release Date: January 16, 2024

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but when a cover is this good? Yeah, that’s a must-pick-up. Nightwing is anyway, but Dick trying to solve a spat between the Supersons? Sign me up.

5. Superman #10

Superman #10 cover

Release Date: January 16, 2024

Is this the best the Superman books have been in years? Maybe! I highlighted Action Comics above, and Superman has also been excellent. Here, Clark is back in the Old West for a cowboy-style adventure, with Bruno Redondo on art. Here’s hoping there’s at least one Back to the Future III reference in the issue.

6. Wonder Woman #5

Wonder Woman #5 cover

Release Date: January 16, 2024

Love it or hate it, Wonder Woman has become a must-read title under Tom King and Daniel Sampere. While the careful, intricate way King has been slowly bringing Diana closer to villain The Sovereign is the main focus of the series, the real highlight is the laugh-out-loud funny backup stories with art by Belén Ortega.

7. Superman Lost #10

Superman Lost #10 cover

Release Date: January 16, 2024

Easily the most depressing Superman book released… Ever? Wraps up with issue #10, as Superman will either break through his malaise, or, you know… Lose. Masterful storytelling that has the possibility of ending in the saddest way, ever.

8. The Penguin #6

The Penguin #6 cover

Release Date: January 23, 2024

In the last issue of The Penguin, our avian villain was about to return to Gotham City. So naturally, this issue we flash back in time to the first meeting between Oswald and Bruce. This series has been a careful march forward for writer Tom King, so it will be interesting to see how he maintains the tension by jumping backward.

9. Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2024 Annual

Batman / Superman: World's Finest 2024 Annual

Release Date: January 30, 2024

Mark Waid goes on a tour of the DC Universe in this delightful sounding annual, which ties into both World’s Finest books, and tees up a few other stories, as well.

10. Titans: Beast World #6

Titans Beast World #6 cover

Release Date: January 30, 2024

The final issue of the series (with three releasing this month) wraps up the story of the DC Universe getting changed into half-beast creatures. Plus, the villainous Dr. Hate will be revealed. And most likely it will end in DC teeing up another event. So, you know: must-read, if you care about the ongoing continuity of the DC Universe. If you don’t, it’s still a lot of fun.

11. DC Power 2024 #1

DC Power 2024 #1

Release Date: January 30, 2024

DC’s anthology issues are uniformly pretty great. But this one is an absolute must-pick-up for one reason alone: an epilogue to the award-winning Far Sector from creators N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell.
