Doctor Who: Once Upon A Time Lord #1 Review:

In the oversized issue, Martha Jones is captured by beings called the Pyromeths and forced to tell them stories of the Doctor. Host Alex Zalben pointed out that Dan Slott is one of the biggest Doctor Who fans around, and doesn’t miss his shot at finally getting to write a story for the franchise.

However, what drew Zalben in was that, “even stronger than as a Doctor Who story this is a great Dan Slott story. This is like classic Dan Slott, knows literally everything about this continuity, knows how to make it work in a way that is accessible for new readers, and draws you in with a tightly woven tale.”

Added Zalben, “I thought this was absolutely phenomenal, and if it was on TV, it would stand up with some of the best episodes of Doctor Who.”

But don’t take a Doctor Who fan’s word for it: the other hosts (who don’t watch Doctor Who) loved the issue, too. Said Pete Lepage, “I was surprised and I love this… Doctor Who misses me a lot of the time… I’ve tried to watch it. I’ve tried to read other comics… But this was, I found, very enjoyable. It got a little meta at times, which usually turns me away, but I thought it was really impressive.”

As for more Doctor Who? LePage added, “Dan Slott’s a huge fan but I think he did an amazing job. I hope he gets to write some more.”

Doctor Who: Once Upon a Time Lord #1 hits stores on October 31 from Titan Comics.
