TMNT #1 sells 140,000 copies.

Tradd Moore’s whisky comic costs $27,000.

More Marvel Must-Haves comics coming.

This is Comic Book Club News for June 10, 2024.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 Sells 140,000 Copies:

IDW’s upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 is already a big hit. Per AIPT, the issue has pre-sold 140,000 copies to comic book stores, as of June 7.

As usual, a little caveat here: these are issues pre-ordered by comic book stores, either on request by customers or in anticipation of demand. And with at least 15 covers including variants that are only granted for pre-buying 500 copies, IDW wasn’t leaving anything to chance here.

That all said, 100,000 copies seems to be the new threshold for best-sellers when it comes to mainstream comics. So the new issue by Jason Aaron and Joëlle Jones is, indeed, a huge success when it comes to pre-sales, particularly given it could stretch north of 200,000 copies with more advance sales, and further printings of the issue. Add in that The Last Ronin trade has been at the top of the graphic novel charts for years, it’s clear that fans are hungry for Turtles.

Meaning they want to read TMNT, not eat turtles. Though maybe both! I don’t know your life.

The issue officially hits stores on July 24, 2024.

Tradd Moore Teams Up With Ardbeg For Comic Whisky Combo That Costs $27,000:

Going from “you can get it anywhere” to “you can’t even afford this”: writer/artist Tradd Moore has created a unique, high-end comic that costs about $27,000. Or rather, he’s created a comic that’s paired with a whisky that costs that much. But this is Comic Book Club News, not Whiskey Club News.

The news comes via SKTCHD, which reports that Ardbeg The Abyss will be limited to 400 copies and paired with a comic by Moore. The whisky is priced at 25,000 Euros, and is a rebottling of a similarly limited run of whisky from 1989 called Ardbeg Corryvreckan. To commemorate the experience, the company contracted Moore to create a comic retelling the legend of the “heart of Corryvreckan,” which will be encased along with the liquor in a sealed diving chamber.

This isn’t the first time Ardbeg created a comic, though the Planet Ardbeg anthology featuring Ronald Wimberly, Emma Rios, and Sanford Greene was less costly than the one by Moore, and came packaged with other, less limited runs of Whisky.

You can purchase Ardbeg the Abyss while supplies last, if you have that kind of money, Mr. Money Bags.

More Marvel Must-Haves Free Comics Coming:

In case you’re broke after buying all those TMNT covers and whisky comics, Marvel has some great news for you: they’re keeping the free Marvel Must-Haves program going through July.

This time around, the publisher will be collecting three issues in one, free volume: Amazing Spider-Man #39, Avengers #7, and Moon Knight #1.

The first is the kick-off to the Spider-Man Gang War storyline, by Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr. The second is by Jed MacKay and C.F. Villa, and begins an arc pitting the Avengers versus the Twilight Court. And the Moon Knight issue is also by MacKay, with art by Alessandro Cappuccio.

Naturally, all three storylines picking up from these issues are currently available in trade collections – so as Marvel likes to say, only the first taste is free; the rest is gonna cost ya. Actually I don’t think they say that.

Strangely, Marvel’s PR didn’t come with a release date, just the note that it’s in July and you should ask your comic book shop about it. So, you know, go do that.
