Folks, we almost have the whole Supernatural band back together. As revealed by actor Jared Padalecki in a recent interview, he’s been in discussions with The Boys creator Eric Kripke about a possible appearance in the fifth and final season. And if Padalecki does sign up, that could reunite him with not only his Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles, but also their on-screen dad, Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
When asked during a recent interview by Deadline if he’d be up for joining The Boys, Padalecki said, “The answer is yes.”
And it’s not a speculative “yes,” either. Padalecki and Kripke have already been in discussions, as of “today”… The interview was posted on June 21, though did not specify when it had actually occurred.
“We have talked [about a role],” Padalecki continued. “As a matter of fact, we talked today I think at this point in my acting life, I only want to work on projects that I really care about or with people that I really care about, and obviously Eric and I are indelibly connected forever.”
Padalecki went on to explain how Kripke created the role of Sam Winchester, which defined his career for 15 seasons — and introduced him to his wife, Genevieve Padalecki. “I adore him. I adore his humor. I adore him as a person, his storytelling. So I can’t wait. I don’t think [Season 5] films until next year, but I will be ready when he makes the phone call. I’ll just say ‘Okay, when am I flying out?’”
Naturally, there are a lot of details to work out there. Not least of which is that The Boys Season 5 is only a few months into the writing process. As Padalecki notes, they’re a ways away from filming the final season. A lot of things can crop up in the intervening time, like scheduling conflicts. But it seems like both parties are open to figuring something out. The question is: what will they figure out?
Will The Boys Season 5 Feature A Winchester Family Reunion?

As The Boys fans know, Jensen Ackles, who played Sam Winchester to Padalecki’s Dean Winchester on Supernatural, appeared last season as the Captain America-style stand-in, Soldier Boy. At the end of Season 3, Soldier Boy was defeated and put into cryogenic sleep by the CIA. But rumors have pointed to his possible return by the end of Season 4, setting up the events of Season 5.
As for Morgan, his appearance in Season 5 is also TBD. Right now, he’s playing the role of Joe Kessler, a former contact and war buddy of Billy Butcher (Karl Urban). On Supernatural, he played John Winchester, the absent/occasionally dead father of the Winchester boys. Like Ackles, we don’t know his character’s fate going into Season 5, but if he is still around it would be a missed opportunity to not have all three of them in the same frame at some point.
They’re far from the only Supernatural veterans to appear on both shows, though. Most notably, Jim Beaver plays the role of President Bobby Singer on The Boys. On Supernatural, he was the Winchester’s trusty mentor and companion named… Bobby Singer. Other crossover actors include Nathan Mitchell, Maddie Phillips, Rob Benedict (of the notorious Sauna Scene), and many, many more.
Still, if Padalecki does make his way to The Boys, not to speak for Supernatural fans, but I’d guess the main draw would be an Ackles/Padalecki/Morgan reunion.
Who Could Jared Padalecki Play On The Boys?
So who could Padalecki play in the final season? A lot of that, of course, depends on what happens in the rest of Season 4 — the show has diverged enough from the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson that it’s tough to predict what might happen properly. But I’d venture that this won’t be a drive-by cameo, as other name actors have shown up for good, meaty roles.
Certainly, Padalecki could be some sort of original character, a CIA officer or governmental official earnestly helping The Boys of the title. Or he could be some sort of depraved Supe, a la Benedict’s recent appearance on the show, though given Padalecki’s clean image, that seems doubtful. Perhaps the funniest possibility is if he was made into some sort of Soldier Boy II, a la this season’s Black Noir II, a replacement for Ackles’ original hero.
Whatever it is, though, chances are we’re about a year out from finding out whether Padalecki will, indeed, appear. Stay tuned.
