The 40th anniversary of the classic family flick Labyrinth isn’t until 2026, but BOOM! Studios is getting the party started early with the first-ever graphic adaptation of the movie. Or rather, it’s the first-ever adaptation of the adaptation, as this new version is drawn directly from A.C.H. Smith’s novelization of the movie.
Written by Kyla Vanderklugt, with art by Giorgio Spalletta, this unique project will follow the plot of the film, as a young girl named Sarah must travel to the center of the Goblin City to rescue her baby brother, Toby, from the Goblin King, Jareth. Only this time, there’ll be a little less singing. Since it’s a graphic novel, of course.
“Labyrinth is such a unique fantasy that holds a special place in the hearts of so many,” said Vanderklugt in a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “It was a privilege to adapt the film into graphic novel form, and Giorgio’s art is perfect to bring the story to mesmerizing life. I can’t wait for readers to fall in love with the world and characters all over again, just as I did.”
Added Spalletta, “Labyrinth is one of the films that most frightened and most fascinated me as a child. I am overjoyed to interpret that universe that has so influenced my imagination by getting to explore every corner of it.”
The new graphic novel, which comes from BOOM! Studio’s Archaia imprint, features a main cover by Miguel Mercado, with variant covers by Elizabeth Torque, Veronica Fish, and David Mack.
Jem Henson’s Labyrinth #1 will hit stores on September 18, 2024, but you can check out three of the covers, below:
