First Look: Archaia’s “Sanpaku” Deals With Loss, Bad Omens And Strict Dieting

Sanpaku

Arriving in stores this August, SANPAKU, from cartoonist Kate Gavino (Last Night’s Reading) gives voice to the insecurities that haunt teens of all cultures told through the eyes of Marcine, a young woman fascinated with the Japanese idea of Sanpaku—that seeing the white around the iris of your eyes is a bad omen. But it’s everywhere Marcine looks—her grandmother has it, some classmates at Catholic school have it, JFK had it…even Marcine might suffer from this odd condition. Eating a strict macrobiotic diet and meditating is supposed to help, but no matter how much Marcine wants it to, it can’t save her grandmother’s life or make her days at school any easier.

SANPAKU is one of those books I couldn’t put down the first time I read it. Gavino’s beautifully imaginative writing, and stark cartooning, make for a wildly charming, insightful, coming-of-age story bound to religion, superstition, and adolescent risk-taking,” said Sierra Hahn, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Gavino is poised to be one of the most original voices of her generation.”

Archaia is home to sophisticated, high-end graphic novels such as Mouse Guard by David Petersen, The Realist by Asaf Hanuka and Rust by Royden Lepp, along with series inspired by world-renowned, beloved properties like Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation. The Award-winning imprint has spawned a number of critically-acclaimed recent hits including Jane by Aline Brosh McKenna and Ramón K. Pérez in September 2017; Bolivar by Sean Rubin in November 2017; and the upcoming A Girl in The Himalayas by David Jesus Vignolli, available in stores this month.

Print copies of SANPAKU will be available for sale in August 2018 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.
