Here’s How ‘Gen V’ Season 2 Pays Tribute To The Late Chance Perdomo

Gen V Chance Perdomo

One of the biggest questions leading into Gen V Season 2 is how the show will address the shocking, untimely death of star Chance Perdomo back in March of 2024. Well, as we see in the Season 2 premiere, they waste no time addressing it, as the episode opens with two, simple words: “For Chance.”

In case you’re not aware of what happened, Perdomo was riding a motorcycle up to the Toronto set of Gen V, in order to start production on Season 2. Some time, either late on March 29 or early on March 30, he was involved in an accident and died from his injuries in the crash. The horrific event led to the halting of production on the season, and out of respect for Perdomo’s performance as Andre Anderson, the show decided to not recast the role, but rather weave his passing into the season itself.

Spoilers for Gen V past this point, but even beyond the “For Chance” title card, when the season picks up, we’ve jumped ahead from the Season 1 cliffhanger, which found Andre, Marie (Jaz Sinclair), Emma (Lizze Broadway), and Jordan (London Thor and Derek Luh) trapped in a circular prison with no doors or windows. Instead, we discover that Marie managed to escape the prison, now known as “Elmira.” When the rest of the Godolkin University kids got the chance to try and escape, they did… But it didn’t go well.

“After you escaped he said you were proof there was a way out,” Jordan explains late in the season premiere. “And he found some… Metal maintenance pipe. But he wouldn’t just go by himself. He waited for when we all had a chance. But when he took us, somebody had walled the pipe off with brick. And he couldn’t pull it open. And there were guards, and dogs, and lights. And so he tried to rip open a huge steel door instead. And it wouldn’t move. His powers weren’t strong enough. And I begged him to stop. I begged him. But he’s so stubborn. And he kept trying. And he stroked the f**k out. And he dropped. And he died.”

Marie, stunned, asks, “Why didn’t he stop?” To which Jordan spitefully replies, “Because he was trying to be you.”

Ouch. What the kids don’t know that we, the audience knows, is that Andre had micro-tears in his brain that got worse every time he used his powers, something he inherited from his father, Polarity (Sean Patrick Thomas).

Laudably, what Season 2 of Gen V does is not let any of this go. While it doesn’t forget to have a little beer pong and explosions and blood at the same time, the death of Andre, and therefore the real-life death of Chance Perdomo, infuses and powers the season, right up until the cliffhanger at the end of Episode 3, “H Is For Human,” and beyond. At times, it’s uncomfortably real, like in Jordan’s speech above — it’s hard to tell where London Thor’s grief about Chance Perdomo ends, and Jordan’s grief about Andre begins. But hopefully, as the cast and crew have discussed, this is what Perdomo would have wanted. It’s given them a chance to process and heal, while making an enjoyable and timely TV show at the same time.

RIP, Chance Perdomo.
