Spider-Man 4… No more! The fourth outing for Tom Holland in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) doesn’t just have a number anymore. As of this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the movie is now titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The news came via Sony’s presentation last night (March 31), where they touted their upcoming slate to theater owners and assorted press. That included news and footage from Karate Kid Legends, the new Resident Evil movie, and perhaps most excitingly? Spider-Man.
Specifically, Sony showed off the first footage from the animated threequel Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, which is now set to premiere on June 4, 2027. And they also brought on Tom Holland via video to announce the title for the upcoming live-action film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Though details were light on the movie, which goes into production this summer for a July 31, 2026 release, Holland called the movie a “fresh start” after the last movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, left the world not remembering Peter Parker’s identity. That includes his former girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon), both of whom are expected to return for the new movie. Also joining the cast? Sadie Sink in an undisclosed role, though the popular theory is she’s playing the X-Men’s Jean Grey because they both have red hair, and people with red hair can only play characters with red hair because wigs don’t exist.
The most interesting thing about this announcement is the title, which marks the first time a Spider-Man movie has taken its name directly from a Marvel Comics storyline. And this is an apt one: the “Brand New Day” story in the comics came directly after “One More Day,” a story that found the demon Mephisto taking Spider-Man’s marriage to Mary Jane in exchange for the life of his Aunt May, and in the process essentially rebooting the title. Not to get too wonky, but this is a different comic book storyline than the one that found Doctor Strange wiping the world’s memory of Spider-Man’s identity, a la what happened in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Anyway, it’s just a title, and there’s not much more that needs to be taken from that. It’s highly unlikely it’s pulling anything from those particular comics… In fact, given the movie is being released between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the popular theory is it will take place on the patchwork planet Battleworld which is made out of the remains of the multiverse. You know, Spider-Man stuff.
The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel Studios, and is the co-creator of the upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man.
