We’re inching ever closer to the Season 4 premiere of The Boys, and naturally, you might be wondering if this is the last season of the series. After all, streamers like Prime Video don’t have the best record with shows running long-term. So is this it for The Boys? And if not, how many seasons of The Boys will there be?
Let’s break down what we know about the future of The Boys, including whether there will be a Season 5 (yes) and whether there will be more seasons after that (probably).
Update: As of June 11, 2024, showrunner Eric Kripke has announced that Season 5 will be the final season of The Boys. Original story follows.
The Boys Season 5 Is Already Being Worked On
The good news is that Season 4 of The Boys is not the final season. In fact, in advance of the Season 4 premiere date, Prime Video already renewed The Boys for Season 5. And while Production Weekly indicated that Season 5 might have already stealthily been in production — not so. As of about five days ago, since nobody puts dates on their articles anymore, showrunner Eric Kripke revealed they were about one month into the writers room for Season 5.
While that’s good news, it’s a little surprising they aren’t farther along… Season 4 wrapped over a year ago, and while the post-production process is long on an effects-heavy series like this one, to be honest, I would have expected that Prime Video picked up The Boys a while ago, and scripts already were banked. That seems to be the general M.O. for streamers, but not so in this case.
I will add on a sad note, it’s possible some things may have had to change due to the untimely death of Gen V star Chance Perdomo, who died in a motorcycle accident on March 30, 2024. The spinoff series was getting ready to head into production on Season 2, which would have picked up where The Boys Season 4 left off. However, with Perdomo’s passing, they have gone back and are working on rewriting that second season, as they won’t recast his lead role. Given Gen V Season 2 will be passing the baton, so to speak, to The Boys Season 5, there may be some things — big or small – that would need to change with whatever the plan may be.
Or, perhaps they just didn’t start writing until a month ago, I don’t know.
Will The Boys Continue Past Season 5? What We Know About The Boys Season 6 And Beyond
As for further seasons of The Boys, that’s very much TBA. We know they’re working on Season 5, as mentioned above. Gen V will get a Season 2, despite the tragic death of Perdomo. So in terms of the universe, expect new episodes in the world of The Boys to continue for at least the next year or two.
There’s another spinoff, The Boys: Mexico, which was announced in November of 2023, though as of now we don’t know much else. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is the showrunner and is a producer alongside Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal. So maybe it’s also a Y Tu Mamá También spinoff, but probably not.
But what of the main thing you want to know? Is The Boys Season 5 the final season? Initially, Kripke had talked up a five-season plan for the series, and in 2020 during a Q&A on Twitter (now called X) he said as much.
“The rough idea in my head is five seasons total,” Kripke said. “But I also know better than to say how many seasons a show is going to have, ’cause my last show Supernatural, I said ‘five seasons, for sure,’ and then that f**ker went 15. So I’m mostly going to keep my mouth shut, but creatively five feels like a good, round number.”
I would personally argue that Supernatural never recovered from finishing up its story in Season 5, for what it’s worth! So maybe make a decision either way, Kripke!
Amazon Would Probably Love The Boys To Run For Infinity Seasons
As for Amazon, as you might expect, the answer to how long The Boys — aka one of the one runaway hits on Prime Video they’ve been able to franchise — will run, the answer is “How long you got?”
In an interview with EW in September of 2023, Vernon Sanders, the head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, said as much.
“I will say this: Eric has had a vision for what this all leads to for years now, and we’ve been in an ongoing conversation about what comes next,” said Sanders. “So, it’s probably premature to talk about that beyond saying we believe in Eric, and if Eric is interested in continuing the story, we’ll be the first ones in line to really work with him on what that is.”
You can probably figure out the timing for yourself, but this was before the Season 5 announcement, which as of yet has not been announced as “the final season.” So while they’re willing to follow Kripke’s guidance, it’s clear Prime Video will continue The Boys, and its spinoffs, for as long as they can.
Pure Speculation Time: How Long Will The Boys Run?
My best guess? Season 5 won’t be the last season of the show unless the writers’ room makes a creative decision to end things there. Beyond that, we’ll get an abbreviated Season 6 or wrap-up movie, and that is where the show will end. Meanwhile, Gen V will potentially fill the gaps, running at least through Season 3 (so: The Boys Season 4, Gen V Season 2, The Boys Season 5, Gen V Season 3, The Boys Season 6). And meanwhile, Amazon will work on extensions like The Boys: Mexico, and possibly other markets beyond.
That keeps the whole thing going for at least another two to three years — at which point the streaming landscape will have changed so vastly, that it’ll probably make sense for Prime Video to move onto something new. Again, complete, pure speculation here, as it’s entirely possible Season 5 could be announced as the final season when they announce the premiere date. But for the moment, that’s my best guess.
