This is the two-hundredth episode of Comic Book Club News, for May 24, 2024.

Marvel August 2024 Solicit Highlights:

Today marks the two-hundredth daily episode of this news podcast, and while I was really hoping to put Magneto on trial again in this episode, instead why don’t we take a jaunt through Marvel’s solicits for August — aka the text and covers they send to retailers to hype up pre-orders for titles?

First up, Marvel is still all-in on the new era of X-Men in month two of the titles, with the kick-off of Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone and David Marquez, the first issue of the satirical X-Factor, two issues of the adjectiveless X-Men title, and second issues of X-Force, NYX, and Phoenix. That’s not to mention two Wolverine miniseries, two Deadpool series, and to tie those up, a backup story titled Deadpool/Wolverine: Weapon X-Traction that runs through multiple titles X-Men and non-X-Men.

Moving on from Marvel’s hopefully once again merry mutants, after taking on Wolverine — okay, I guess we didn’t move that far — the Predator tries to kill Black Panther in a four-issue miniseries from Benjamin Percy and Chris Allen. Meanwhile, Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom, and Francesco Manna cross the Avengers with Ultraman in another four-issue miniseries.

While the Blood Hunt is over, the Venom War is just kicking off. Pitting Eddie Brock against his son Dylan Brock to see who will be the one and only Venom, the battle spills over into four different miniseries, as well as the main Venom title — and the Venom War series itself. Surprisingly, there will be no Red Band variants for Venom War, though the adults-only editions will be spooled out for the Wolverine: Revenge mini, as well as the upcoming Werewolf By Night, which will only be released in a Red Band edition.

Moving on to Spider-Man, as previously reported we’ll be getting the preschool-focused Spidey and his Amazing Friends. Spider-Society from writer Alex Segura and an exciting new artist named “TBA” is the latest Spider-Verse mash-up book. There’s also a new anthology titled Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood, which presumably uses only my two favorite colors for the book: black suit, and blood.

And continuing on Spider-Man for a second, we’re getting a miniseries titled Chasm: Curse of Kaine, which pits Spider-Man’s two clones against each other. And in Spider-Man: Reign II #2, Old Man Peter Parker travels back in time to save Mary Jane from, uh, the way she died in the first series. This is an all-ages podcast so I’ll let you look that one up for yourself.

Other than X-Men, Marvel is hitting the double shipping hard in August like they’ve got rent due, with two issues of Fantastic Four and two issues of Incredible Hulk. There are also two Moon Knight series, including a new anthology titled Phases of the Moon Knight that looks at previous Fists of Khonshu. And last but not least, there’s the Marvel 85th Anniversary Special, the latest oversized issue that pays tribute to the Marvel Universe. Here, storytellers in the 85th Century take a look back at the age of heroes, featuring an all-star roster of writers and artists.

Before we go, I will highlight two titles that are not on the August solicits: Sensational She-Hulk, and Captain Marvel. Issue #10 of both series will be released in July, and the only mention of either is a trade collection of issues six through 10 of She-Hulk that will hit in August. We’ve reached out to Marvel to get more info on the status of both series but did not receive word back by recording time.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And a sincere thanks to anyone and everyone who has checked out this podcast for the past 200 episodes. I’ll be taking a short hiatus myself next week but will return in June with new episodes. Until then, make mine reading through solicits!
