As the prophecy foretold, the death of Thor in Marvel’s Immortal Thor #25 will lead to — what else — a new Thor #1. But the publisher promises this “sets up a captivating new status quo for the God of Thunder unlike any in his 60+ year history,” per PR. Given Thor has been dead, alive, a god, a human, another woman, and one time a horse alien… We’ll believe it when we see it?
That said, the bigger draw here is that while Al Ewing continues the story he’s been telling on Immortal Thor, he’ll be joined by artist Pasqual Ferry who last drew the god of thunder during Matt Fraction’s run on the series.
“Since the very first issue of IMMORTAL THOR, Thor’s been facing the end of his tale… but that was only the end of Act One,” Ewing said via press release. “As the next chapter begins, Thor must face threats he’s never faced, from a place he’s never been… until now. Is he alive? Is he dead? Is he immortal… or much, much more? You’ll have to join us to find out.”
Here’s the synopsis for the issue:
THE LEGEND BEGINS!
The Norse Myths tell of Gods who walked the Earth, doing great deeds for the mortals who believed in them. But Asgard isn’t real, and never was. The Gods never soared in our skies, never stood with our heroes, never fought for kindness or justice. It was all just a story. Nobody’s coming to help us. But somewhere in the city… a man is waking up.
A man with a hammer.
Given that text, and the cover by Alex Ross (below), it’s fair to think that we’re back to the Donald Blake/Thor in one body deal. But it would be hard to say that would be unlike anything in the 60+ year run, because that would, in fact, be very like something else in the 60+ year run.
Anyway, we’ll know more when Thor #1 hits stores on August 27.
