Today we’re taking a look through the highlights from DC Comics solicits for October 2024, including DC All In, some spooky Halloween books, and much, much more.
This is Comic Book Club News for July 22, 2024.
DC Comics October 2024 Solicit Highlights:
The big news for DC is October is the end of the Absolute Power event and the beginning of the DC All In initiative. What’s the difference between an event and an initiative? One is story-based, the other isn’t. Except when it is.
Regardless of any confusion, the current era of DC ends in Absolute Power #4, teasing a multiversal confrontation with Amanda Waller, and the return of the Justice League. That same day, DC releases the DC All In Special, which finds that new Justice League facing off against Darkseid, flipbook style. On the side of the good guys, that leads into a ton of what are supposed to be new reader-friendly runs on the mainline DC books. On the Darkseid, er, side, it leads directly into the brand new Absolute Universe.
Launching in October from that line are Absolute Batman by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, and Absolute Wonder Woman by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman. Then in November comes Absolute Superman by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval. All three titles find the heroes without their support systems. No mansion, no money, mo problems for Batman, presumably.
Jumping back to the mainline DC titles, it’s all a mix of some continuing creative teams and directions, and some new creative teams and directions… Albeit without the renumbering you might expect from this sort of thing. To give you a sense of the contrast here, Chip Zdarsky seems to be continuing along with his run on Batman, as does Tom King for Wonder Woman. Meanwhile, Joshua Williamson is launching Superman out of Absolute Power with the return of Doomsday, and Lois Lane now in the Superwoman costume.
Meanwhile, Mark Waid and Mariko Tamaki are taking over Action Comics, which is running weekly throughout October with a new storyline. Tom Taylor and Mikel Janín take over Detective Comics, Dan Watters and Dexter Soy are on Nightwing, and Elliott Kalan and Mindy Lee are on Harley Quinn.
I won’t read off every single team here, but again, this is all a mix of continuing storylines, and new storylines, and honestly sort of seems like business as usual.
Other highlights from the month include Batman and Robin: Year One, a 12-issue series from the very busy Mark Waid and Chris Samnee. And a 48-page special titled Poison Ivy/Swamp Thing: Feral Trees, from regular series writer G. Willow Wilson, and artist Mike Norton.
And don’t forget that October is spooky month because DC sure hasn’t. They’ve got DC Horror Presents featuring tales by horror icons the Boulet Brothers. A Creature Commandos one-shot from David Dastmalchian. An Elseworlds title called Green Lantern Dark from Tate Brombal and Werther Dell’edera. And Batman takes on a werewolf in Batman: Full Moon by Rodney Barnes.
