Marvel Turns Donald Duck Into Thor For New ‘What If…?’ One-Shot

MARVEL & DISNEY: WHAT IF…? DONALD DUCK BECAME THOR #1

It’s an eternal question that’s plagued comic book fans for decades, breaking friendships apart and causing riots at comic cons: What if Donald Duck became Thor? And now, Marvel will answer that long-standing debate with a one-shot appropriately titled Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor #1.

Following up on the highly anticipated Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime #1, as well as Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine #1, this new issue riffs off the classic first appearance of Thor in Journey Into Mystery #83, by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Larry Lieber. Only this time, instead of Donald Blake, it’s Donald Duck. Huh, maybe that’s where the idea came from?

Here’s the official synopsis of the issue, via a press release provided to Comic Book Club by Marvel:

“IS THIS FOWL WORTHY OF THE HAMMER OF THOR?! When Donald Duck chaperones Huey, Dewey and Louie on an archaeological trip to search for ancient Viking artifacts, he finds more than he bargained for! He comes across the Stone Ducks from Saturn preparing for an invasion. But everything changes when he discovers an enchanted cane that causes an egg-ceptional transformation, gifting him with the POWER OF THOR! Can he learn how to use his new abilities in time to save Duckburg before he changes back? Find out in this mind-twisting retelling of the Mighty Thor’s thunderous origin!”

Added Editor Mark Paniccia, “When we saw the designs for the Stone Ducks of Saturn and The Destroyer we literally laughed out loud. I can honestly say I never thought I’d see something like this in my career. I gotta pinch myself to make sure it’s not a dream.”

Not a dream, not an imaginary story! The new book features a plot by Steve Behling, is written by Riccardo Secchi, with art and a cover by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio. Additional covers are by Walter Simonson, Peach Momoko, Phil Noto, and Lorenzo Pastrovicchio. It will hit stores on September 4, 2024, but you can check out some of those covers, below:
