We’ve known for a while that actor Giancarlo Esposito has been interested in a role in the MCU. And fans have been interested in him taking a role in the MCU. But now, thanks to an appearance at Phoenix Fan Fusion on May 25, we know that Esposito hasn’t just taken a role… It’ll be a biggie. So will Giancarlo Esposito be the MCU’s pick to play the X-Men character Doop?
Here’s the quote Esposito gave to his panel, per Legion of Sand: “The MCU has knocked on my door, and it’s a role you won’t predict. It will be teased, and there will be a series afterward.”
I can’t personally verify this quote, mind you. And at first, I thought it was translated from another language from a foreign comic con, but nope! It’s just weirdly worded. Let’s say for the sake of argument it’s accurate. The info here is that Esposito has joined the MCU, it’s a role we “won’t predict,” and it’s more than one appearance.
Naturally, after saying we won’t predict it, fans online have tried to predict it. They’ve thrown out everything from Professor X and Doctor Doom, which seem like the sorts of things fans might predict, to Molecule Man and Hunter’s Moon, which they did predict but seem less predictable, I guess.
The thing that makes this even trickier is we don’t have a lot of official info about what Marvel has coming up on their slate for the first time in several decades. We also know they were contracting their movie and TV pipeline, meaning something that Esposito has been told will include both a “tease” and a series afterward implies a movie end credits scene, as well as a Disney+ series spinoff. Thinking about this reasonably, it could just be that’s what Esposito’s contract says, and what actually happens is TBD.
But what about Doop? The green mutant ball that appeared in X-Statix is Taylor Swift’s role to lose, but Esposito could knock it out of the park. Sure he’s known for expansive, perfectly articulated monologues. Because of that, we definitely wouldn’t predict him playing a blob spewing nonsense. That wouldn’t be predictable! And could you imagine, Doop shows up in the end credits of Deadpool & Wolverine, spins out into an All-New Doop series on Disney+, the fans go WILD.
Or, you know, maybe he’s playing Doctor Doom.
