What If…? Season 2 has just wrapped up on Disney+ with an epic season finale, which means one thing: when will What If…? Season 3 premiere? What is the What If…? Season 3 release date? When can I cram some more TV in my eyeholes, benevolent masters??
More seriously, we do know that What If…? Season 3 is coming to give more twisted takes on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While we don’t know the rest of the cast, Jeffrey Wright should be back as the voice of The Watcher. And we’ll probably get plenty more Hayley Atwell as Captain Carter, as well.
But beyond that, when can you watch the episodes? Here’s what we know about the upcoming MCU release schedule, and where What If…? Season 3 might fit in.
What If…? Season 3 Release Date: What We Know So Far
Though there’s no confirmed release date for What If…? Season 3, weirdly a clip leaked from an episode to a random X (formerly Twitter) account. The clip features Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian, a young Bill Foster, and a new character named Ranger Morales. It teases that What if…? Season 3 is coming soon… Turns out it’s real, as the clip later was officially posted by Marvel, albeit with no additional details.
Regardless, we can speculate about the What If…? Season 3 release date. Season 1 came out from August through October of 2021. Season 2 was released over nine days in December 2023. While you could extrapolate Season 3 will be released in 2025, I’d expect it to come out sooner than that. Part of the delay between seasons was an intense reshuffling of MCU shows and movies. If they have indeed already started production, there’s a good chance it could be released sometime in 2024.
Upcoming MCU Release Schedule: Where Will What If…? Season 3 Fit In?
Currently, the only confirmed release dates for the MCU in 2024 are Echo, which premieres on Disney+ on January 9; and Deadpool 3, which hits theaters on July 26, 2024. Beyond that, Marvel Studios’ new animation wing has announced they’ll be releasing Eyes of Wakanda and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (formerly known as Spider-Man: Freshman Year) in 2024. Live-action series Agatha: Darkhold Diaries — or whatever it eventually ends up being titled — is also expected to be released in 2024.
To that end, as What If…? Season 3 is already in production, it’s possible it could come out after Deadpool 3 in August through October, a la the release schedule of Season 1. That would lead nicely into Agatha, which is expected to be released in October to tie into Halloween/spooky season. However, if Eyes of Wakanda or Spider-Man are further along, we could see them in that slot with What If…? Season 3 getting pushed to December, or even the beginning of 2025.
Point being: lots of unknowns here, but we fully expect you won’t have to wait another two years for What if…? Season 3. Fall 2024 is the most likely release range; early 2025 at the latest.
