Marvel has been pretty coy about the plot of their big summer event, Avengers Armageddon, or maybe just Armageddon. We don’t even know the title! But the good news is that if you’re dying to know what the event is all about, you’ll find out tomorrow. Unless you’re reading this tomorrow, in which case you’ll find out today.
Either way, we know this thanks to the latest stylish teaser from the publisher, which shows a silhouette of hovering man with a cap and a white star on this chest, on a red background, with the text “with great power…” As well as the tease that “Armageddon Assembles this June” and to “Stay tuned tomorrow for the official announcement.” Unless it’s next week now, in which case, sorry, you missed it.
So what does this all mean? Likely during Marvel’s presentation to retailers at Comics PRO tomorrow in Glendale, California, the publisher will reveal all — or some — of their publishing plans. We know that Chip Zdarsky is likely writing the event, given he’s laying the groundwork in his run on Captain America and the just-started miniseries Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon. We also know that the Origin Boxes, aka boxes full of superpowers, that Miles Morales brought back from the Ultimate Universe will be important, and explored more in the Reborn: Ultimate Impact series.
On that note, one wonders given the end of the Ultimate Endgame has been pushed back to June, and Reborn picks up on the fallout of that, whether that mini (the first issue was supposed to hit May 20) will get pushed back. But perhaps this whole thing is a freight train (this week’s issue of Weapons of Armageddon takes place somehow after Reborn, so who knows) and Armageddon will come out in June like a deadly asteroid headed directly for Earth that only an elite team of oil drillers can stop.
Also, just gonna throw it out there since this is my last chance to speculate: I’m guessing David Colton, the conflicted Captain America of the 2000s Chip Zdarsky created, gets ahold of the Origin Box and gains the power to change the world to his liking… We left him in Captain America bitter and angry that he couldn’t kill who he wants to do what he thinks is right; and we’re catching up with him years later in Weapons of Armageddon. While the “with great power” tagline indicates Spider-Man, the star sure says Captain America to me.
An unhinged Cap with the powers of a Superman-level character wanting to change the world with nobody able to stop him? Sounds like we won’t wanna miss a thing…
WITH GREAT POWER…
ARMAGEDDON ASSEMBLES this June.
Stay tuned tomorrow for the official announcement.
