While Hijack Season 2 on Apple TV hasn’t been a bloodless affair — RIP poor sustainability consultant Freddie (Albrecht Shuch) — we haven’t seen a ton of deaths on the show… Until now. Spoilers for Hijack Season 2, Episode 6 “Junction” past this point, but by the end of the hour one character is dead, and two more have their lives hanging in the balance. Wonder who dies on Hijack? Read on.
As usual for this pseudo-real-time series, things pick up immediately after the train explosion in the last episode. A little reminder in case you forgot, but each of the four cars of the U-Bahn subway train Sam Nelson (Idris Elba) has hijacked have been outfitted with a bomb, courtesy of an unknown master manipulator/adversary. Jess (Karima McAdams), who by the way killed Freddie, is also being manipulated, just like Sam and the train’s conductor, Otto (Christian Näthe). In her case, she needed to enter a code every 15 minutes or the bombs would go off. And after being discovered by an old woman named Petra (Gabrielle Scharnitzky), Jess was only able to help the passengers enter three of the codes, leading to the destruction of the fourth car on the train.
Also, in the process, while Sam was trying to clear out the car, Petra was essentially trampled to death. Serves her right for… Doing the right thing? I guess Hijack isn’t a morality play, I don’t know.
There’s a bit more before we get there, of course. Sam wakes up in the wreckage, his ears ringing, and Jess standing there, stunned. He tells her they need to tell the man in charge that everything is still under control, and it turns out that man is… Robert Lang (Arsher Ali). He’s an MI5 agent working for Peter Faber (Toby Jones), and is currently in charge of getting last season’s surviving villain John Bailey-Brown (Ian Burfield) to the U-Bahn. Is he the ultimate big boss? Is he working for Bailey-Brown? Is Faber in on it? Based on his conversation with Jess where he says “the people we work for do not tolerate failure,” it seems like he’s a cog, just like Jess and Sam. We also discover that Lang is the man who gave Sam the info on Bailey-Brown being in Berlin, so that closes that particular plot loop.
While the train is literally getting back on track, in the control center the Berlin Federal Police make a plan to take out Sam… When they meet for the handover of John Bailey-Brown at Bergmannstrasse station, they’ll instead kill the lights in the tunnel and kill Sam with one shot to the head. On their side, they don’t know he’s being coerced; all they know is he’s hijacked a train, there’s been an explosion, and at least one person has died.
However, thanks to Lang texting Jess, they get the heads up that the station is crawling with cops. And Sam figures out they’re heading into an ambush, making things very tricky on his end.
Back in the train, while everyone else seems to have made it out of the explosion alive, Petra is taken back to her seat by Stefan (Herbert Forthuber), her husband. He opens a window for her, and though she says she didn’t break anything, she looks pale, and is clearly gasping for air. Fading, she tells the other passengers that they’ll be “back with your loved one very soon,” which is pretty ominous if you ask me. She closes her eyes, and soon after Mei Tan (Jasmine Bayes) grabs Otto because she realizes they need medical attention.
Otto tests her pulse, and turns to Stefan. All he can say is “sorry. There’s nothing else I can do.”
So, RIP Petra. What did she die of? Who is to say? Certainly not Otto, who leaves Stefan crying, “what? what?” Basically: injuries related to the stress of getting trampled. That’s my medical diagnosis, at least!
Do Sam And Jess Die On Hijack? Season 2, Episode 6 Ending Explained

But I did mention two more characters in danger at the end… Specifically, Sam and Jess head out on the tracks to help the train divert past Bergmannstrasse, since they realize the control center can’t track them anymore. The idea is that Otto will drive the train, and then pick the two of them up after they’ve bypassed the ambush. Naturally, that’s not how things work out.
Instead, the assault team heads onto the tracks… They’re not waiting for Sam to pull into the station, they’re going to him. And while Sam thinks he has the upper hand, talking about how he’s pulling into the station for the Bailey-Brown handover, not so. With the assault team in position waiting for the train to pull up, Sam and Jess try to divert the train.
They call Otto, but he’s in the back helping Petra, which gives the assault team enough time to creep up on Sam and Jess. They identify Sam, and at the same time the control room sees footage Sam slipped them on a USB drive (or rather, put in a baby’s bottle) of Jess killing Freddie. So in a bit of an “oops!” moment, they now know the woman with Sa in the tunnel — that would be Jess — is seemingly his accomplice.
Sam, seeing the assault team, grabs Jess, and threatens to kill her… But as far as the authorities know, they’re in it together. Otto begins to pull up the train, and the control room gives the order to take the shot.
The final, er, shot of the episode? Dieter Wolf (Sebastian Hülk), the head of the assault team, shooting at Sam and Jess as the train pulls up behind them.
So are they dead? Is that it? Look, we won’t tell you what happens next, but there is a zero percent chance that Sam is going to die two episodes before the end of the season. Jess’s life is certainly in the balance, but even then there are plenty of ways they can both get out of this one… Jumping behind the train, Wolf takes a bad shot… Anything, really. Unless you see their dead bodies, they’re not dead. Petra though? She dead. Sorry, old lady.
