Harrison Ford Sang The Indiana Jones Theme On ‘Shrinking’ And Now I’m Dead

Harrison Ford and Jason Segel on Shrinking Season 3 Episode 4

There’s a lot going down on this week’s episode of Shrinking on Apple TV. Season 3, Episode 4 “The Field.” Jimmy (Jason Segel) visits Gaby’s (Jessica Williams) class and gets ambushed. We discover that Michael J. Fox’s character is, in fact, real. But most importantly, not just for me, personally, but also for the entire history of television: Harrison Ford sings the Indiana Jones theme song. And now, as a result, I am dead.

To dive into this iconic TV moment that is now up there with the finale of M.A.S.H., Monica and Chandler hooking up, and The Red Wedding on Game of Thrones, Ford’s therapist Paul has been taking off of work in order to get on a more even keel, now that his Parkinson’s diagnosis is progressing. And in fact, after visiting his doctor, she gives him the go-ahead to head back to the office.

And that’s when it happens at about 8 minutes and 45 seconds into the episode, a modern equivalent of finding out who shot J.R. Paul returns to the office, walks into the kitchen, and is proudly doing the classic “dun da dun da, dun da dah!” He even adds a flourish with his hands to present himself. And yes, in case that doesn’t read like anything, it is indeed the Indiana Jones theme, aka the “Raiders March” by John Williams.

To say I fell out of my chair is an understatement.

Paul says with a deep voice, “The GOAT is back” and the scene continues from there, but I don’t know how the episode didn’t stop so that Jason Segel and Jessica Williams (who are also there) could scream with absolutely nerdy glee for the rest of the half-hour’s running time. I mean, I certainly would have if I was on set, which maybe explains why they don’t want me on the set of Shrinking?

Anyway, there’s more episode after that (I guess), but to delve into this a little bit less ridiculously, beyond the joy of the reference is the thrill that Harrison Ford, who famously has been a crusty jerk about most of his franchises, is clearly having so much fun doing Shrinking that they convinced him to drop a blatant Indiana Jones reference? And to sing? That’s crazy-pants, man. He’s doing the work of his career on the series, and it comes through not just in how connected he is to the performance but how willing and game he is for whatever the script throw at him. In this case, an Indiana Jones reference. In others, jokes about “bottomless mimosas” or genuine moments of affection.

It’s wonderful to see, and I wish I could see more of it on the show. But sadly, I have died of Indiana Jones theme related happiness. Thanks, Shrinking. And RIP me.
