You know how The Pitt tries to ground their storylines in real medicine, and not hyper-sensationalize information in a way where it could potentially be useful to viewers? Well, I personally was floored watching this week’s episode of the HBO Max show because… Uh, maybe I don’t have a penicillin allergy??
In the hour, the staff is treating a motorcycle stuntman who got injured during a July 4th stunt. He’s mostly fine (though not getting back to riding his bike any time soon), and as they’re wrapping up one of the nurses goes to give him some medicine.
“Wait,” says med student Joy (Irene Choi), “he has a penicillin allergy.”
The nurse laughs and says he’ll be fine, it’s not really a penicillin allergy. To which the patient says, “My mom said I got a rash with amoxicillin when I was two.”
Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) explains further, saying, “Yeah, probably not a true allergy.”
Joy, still a little confused, says, “But have epi and benydril standing by, right?”
Robby agrees, and the nurse elaborates that, “Most people who think they have a penicillin allergy, actually don’t.”
Wrapping up the scene, Whitaker (Gerran Howell) tells Joy, “Always listen to the nurses, they run the ER. We just try to stay out of their way.”
Friends, I was completely floored watching this scene because I have been telling doctors for years that I had a reaction to amoxicillin when I was younger, and my mother told me a penicillin allergy. And nobody has contradicted me in any way, up until watching this episode of The Pitt.
Without directly consulting my doctor about this, I did look into it, and a helpful article from Harvard Health Publishing delves further into whether you have a penicillin allergy or not. According to the site, while 10% of Americans (in 2019) have reported a penicillin allergy, 90% of them don’t actually have one. Or rather, they may have had a reaction at some point, but “penicillin allergy often does not persist for life.”
To be clear, this is (mostly) a comic book website, so don’t come here looking for medical advice. If you, like me, had a penicillin allergy your mom told you about when you were a kid, it’s worth talking to your doctor and testing again, because it may — or may not — have been a one time thing. Either way, thank you, The Pitt. This is the weirdest time I’ve seen myself on screen.
The Pitt Season 2 Premiere Dates And Episode Guide:
