‘Transformers: The Movie’ Teases Something Is Coming This Friday, But Is It A Theatrical Rerelease?

This Friday, something is coming that ties into the classic 1986 animated release Transformers: The Movie. But what is it? Is it a theatrical rerelease of the film? A new toy? Real Transformers coming to Earth and Optimus Prime reveals he’s my real dad and he loves me? None of the above?

The mysterious teaser was posted on the official Transformers social media accounts, showing a child’s/stunted adult’s bedroom, with an old 13″ TV playing the opening of Transformers: The Movie. Accompanying that is the classic Transformers theme song, before it cuts off and reveals the text “72 Hours To Go.” That, by the way, was about 22/23 hours ago as of this writing, so whatever it’s teasing, it’s coming on Friday.

The caption, which reads “It started like any other story…” isn’t much help. And neither is a stupidly close look at the bedroom, which includes a classic NES, a baseball, a VCR, a candle, a baseball glove, a speaker, a baseball, a VHS tape that seems to read “Family Vacation ’86” and another, unreadable VHS on top of the TV.

So what is this teasing? The popular guess online is a theatrical rerelease of Transformers: The Movie, and/or a Blu-Ray release of the film. That’s not unprecedented, by the way. In fact, it’s very precedented, as back in 2024 to mark the 40th anniversary of the franchise, Hasbro had a brief theatrical event titled Transformers: The 40th Anniversary Event. That featured a table read of the pilot episode side-by-side with the animation, “More Than Meets The Eye, Part 1,” followed by another three episodes, a retrospective, and sneak peeks.

It’s still listed on sites like Fandango, so don’t get too hyped if you see it there — that’s from two years ago, and it’s for the TV event, not the movie event. And the actual anniversary of the movie’s release is August 8, so we’ve got a little time if a theatrical rerelease is what’s going on.

Whatever’s happening? We’ll know more by the end of the week. Fingers crossed it’s Optimus Prime saying he’s proud of me and playing catch with me (which would explain the baseball glove and baseball).
