‘The Pitt’ Shocker: Did They Just Kill Off [SPOILER]?

Dr Robby and Dr Langdon on the Pitt season 2

We should have known something was up on The Pitt when the HBO Max series spent so much time — and spoilers past this point — on building up fan-favorite patient Louie Cloverfield (Ernest Harden Jr.) in the first chunk of the season. Because it sure looks like given the end of Episode 5 that Louie is dead.

To be clear, Louie hasn’t been declared dead yet… When we last leave him, Langdon (Patrick Ball) has entered the room to check on Louie, as they got an alert that previously has been set off when he pulled off his pulse oximeter. But when Langdon pulls back the blanket covering the unmoving Louie, he sees the pulse oximeter is still on his finger, while the monitor gives a terrifying, single beep in the background.

Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) enters, and Langdon breathlessly explains, “He kept pulling off his pulse ox.” They check his pulse, call for a crash cart and intubation, and begin to perform compressions to restart Louie’s heart as the episode cuts to credits.

May I just say: oh, no.

Louie was in and out of the hospital in Season 1, always chipper, always charming, and always deciding to defer giving up alcohol another day. This season, he’s been one of the more recurring patients as they drained fluid from his abdomen, and dealt with an impacted and possibly infected tooth. And despite his clear health issues, it’s clear everyone in The Pitt loves Louie, to the point that Robby sneakily grabbed a confiscated beer to bring as “a parting gift” to the patient.

Instead, it sure looks like due to the casual way they’ve dealt with Louie’s health issues in the past, there’s something they’ve been missing. And if so — though they’ve brought many patients back from the brink of death before — this is a heartbreaking end for one of the brightest lights in the  Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

As is, we’ll have to wait until next week to find out if Langdon and Robby are too late to save Louie. We’ll be keeping a cold one ready, either way.
