‘Hijack’ Season 2, Episode 4 Reveals Who’s Keeping The Train Hijack On Track

Karima McAdams and Idris Elba in "Hijack," now streaming on Apple TV.

The big twist at the beginning of Apple TV‘s Hijack Season 2 was that — spoilers past this point — Sam Nelson (Idris Elba) is the hijacker this time. And he’s seemingly doing it to get revenge for John Bailey-Brown (Ian Burfield) killing his son Kai (Jude Cudjoe) between seasons. But you know that’s not the end of the twists, right? And on this week’s episode we found out a big one… Sam isn’t the only hijacker on board the U-Bahn train: he’s being kept on task by Jess (Karima McAdams).

To provide a little more context here, last week’s episode ended with a shocker: after pretending to blow up sustainability consultant Freddie (Albrecht Schuch), he was killed for real while Sam and train driver Otto (Christian Näthe) left him in the conductor’s booth alone. The suspicion falls on Sam, of course, just as the folks back at the U-Bahn control room were starting to feel like they understood where he was coming from.

While Sam continues to keep the hijack going, and in fact reveals the hijack to the passengers in order to keep everyone on high alert, he also wants to figure out who killed Freddie so they know what they’re dealing with.

The main suspect? One of the passengers who has long hair, seems pretty creepy, oh, and has blood on his hands. He’s also refusing medical help from Jess, which makes him even more suspicious. Also suspicious? Sam’s former intern Mei Tan (Jasmine Bayes), who just happens to be on the same train and keeps saying she wants to help him. She seems to be earnest, though, and not in on the hijack (unless she is) so we can rule her out.

And in fact, she’s trying to clear Sam’s name by talking to Jess about what she saw when the power went out and Freddie was killed. Jess didn’t see anything, and seems to be saddened by Freddie’s bike, which is still lying on the train door. And while this is all going on, Sam is trying to figure out a way to get the footage from the conductor’s booth on a USB drive to the authorities, by sneaking it into a baby’s bottle. If you need more explanation on that, a little asthmatic baby needs to get off the train, so first Sam has Jess check the kid out — there’s nothing she can do, though, probably because she’s not actually a medic?

Mei, meanwhile, gets some info on the suspicious train guy from an old lady who says she went to find the conductor when the train cut out, but long-hair was already there, trying to get rid of something near the doors. The old lady also — in classic noir fashion — tells her to leave it be.

She doesn’t, of course. That never works! And following a trail of blood on the train, Mei finds a package stuck in the gears of the train. She cuts herself, and finds the man standing over her.

They tussle, the bag breaks open… And it’s drugs. He’s not the guy who murdered Freddie, he’s just a drug dealer who was trying to hide his stash. This does help Sam realize that nobody say who killed Freddie because they snuck on the train behind them (or more specifically, Mei).

Jess gets to hold the baby in the trade-off with the kid’s mom, and that’s where he sees it: the rip on the shoulder of Jess’s coat, in the exact spot where there’s a jagged piece of metal on the exit. So if you didn’t put it together: Jess snuck into the conductor’s booth, killed Freddie, and ripped her coat on the jagged metal in the process. And Sam and Otto now know “what we’re up against.”

What Jess wants? And how she’s playing into all of this? And who the master manipulator behind the train hijack is? We’ll just have to stay tuned to find out. But now Sam knows who is working against him to keep the hijack on track: Jess, the evil (maybe) medic.
