Magnetic Press and Oni Press have been on a tear lately with some very cool looking graphic novels. And hey, guess what? Here’s another one: Hana and Taru, the graphic novel debut of writer Léo Schilling and artist Motteu, which we can exclusively reveal here at Comic Book Club.
In the book, which is likened to Miyazaki’s whimsy and wonder, a young hunter-warrior named Taru is trying to make her mark in the adult world, but is “marginalized as much for her naïveté as for her radical ideas, which are dismissed by her mother and peers as nonsense,” per PR. So she’s put in charge of watching a prisoner named Hana, a human with a mysterious past who has been captured by Taru’s tribe. And when Taru’s village is attacked by forest beasts, the two must work together to find out what is causing the beasts to rampage, and how they might be stopped.
“This ecological fable will appeal to fans of Miyazaki’s tales of nature, such as Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa, as well as folkloric classics such as The Borrowers and The Last Unicorn,” said Magnetic Press’ Director of Publishing Mike Kennedy said via press release. “This ecological fantasy tale by writer Leo Schilling and cartoonist Motteux unravels an exciting fantasy tale about finding your own purpose and a responsible balance with nature in a fresh and unique tribal fantasy setting. Schilling and Matteux have created a truly wondrous new world with this story.”
