Sex criminals are top of mind for a lot of people, what with it turning out that pretty much anyone above a certain economic level was regularly casually emailing with prolific pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and asking if they could take a vacation on his pedophile island. For reasons. But a different type of Sex Criminals, the excellent comic books series by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, is the one being adapted into a Prime Video series by Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, and Tze Chun. Thankfully.
Per Image Comics, the book is “Perhaps best described as Bonnie & Clyde meets The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Sex Criminals follows the heartfelt, yet laugh-out-loud romance of Suzie and Jon. When Suzie and Jon have sex, time stops. Literally. So they have lots of sex, fall in love, and eventually start robbing banks. Until they find out they’re not alone…”
That’s a fair overview, but the profane, unique book is unlike anything you’ve ever read thanks in large part to the mind synthesis between Fraction and Zdarsky, two effortlessly hilarious creators who are very much on the same page when it comes to the triumphs and tragedies of extremely graphic sex. While Sex Criminals has been collected in multiple trade collections, if you can I would personally highly recommend seeking out the individual issues, which usually include hilarious covers, outrageous back-matter, and also the comics in between are pretty good as well.
The news was first reported in Hollywood by The Hollywood Reporter, with Nanjiani and Gordon telling the outlet, “Sex Criminals is the exact kind of thing Winter Coat aims to bring to life: love stories in weird places. From the moment LuckyChap brought us Matt and Chip’s comic book, we knew we wanted to bring these characters to screen and are so excited to do that alongside Tze Chun and Prime Video.”
Added Chun, “I’ve been a fan of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s Sex Criminals since the first issue hit the stands. This has been my dream project for over a decade, and co-creating this show with Emily and Kumail has been one of the creative highlights of my career. We are so excited to bring this series to life with our incredible partners at Lucky Chap and Prime Video.”
Nanjiani and Gordon are probably best known for working on the Oscar-nominated The Big Sick together, though you might know Nanjiani from getting jacked for Eternals, or his recent, brief turn on Amazon’s Fallout. Chun, beyond his TKO Comics label, is also the showrunner behind the excellent animated series Gremlins: The Secrets Of The Mogwai, among other productions.
Nanjiani is also set for an acting role in the series, though it’s not confirmed at this time whether he’ll be playing Jon. Also no word on how much budget has been put aside for fake ejaculate, but it’s probably “a lot.”
