‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Episode 3 Ending Explained: Who Is Egg?

Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 3

The latest episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on HBO, Episode 3 “The Squire,” ended with a huge, game-changing reveal. While we’ve already recapped the episode in full, it’s probably worth breaking out the final moment as it’s not explicitly clear what happens, though you can probably piece the clues together yourself. Basically, if you’re looking for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 3 ending explained, and/or wondering who is Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) on AKotSK? We’ve got you covered.

Spoilers past this point, but the short answer is that “Egg” is short for “Aegon Targaryen.” The show has been hinting at this strongly the entire time, to the point that everyone has been pretty much shouting it out loud… Egg clearly excuses himself whenever any of the Targaryens present at the tournament at Ashford look his way, we’ve been told multiple times that two of Maekar Targaryen’s (Sam Spruell) children, Daeron and “another one,” went missing (they’ve avoided saying “Aegon”), and it’s pretty weird that a little dude with alopecia is wandering around Westeros.

Well, nope, Egg does not have alopecia. At the closing of the episode, Ser Duncan The Tall (Peter Claffey) has made the probably deadly mistake of attacking Prince Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennet), who attacked puppeteer Tanselle Too-Tall (Tanzyn Crawford) after her puppet show depicted her killing a dragon. There’s certain sensitivities around that because all the Targaryen dragons have died out, and also, Aerion is a huge a-hole.

Anyway, just as Aerion is about to curb-stomp Duncan, in runs Egg. While Dunk warns his little squire not to say anything, he instead commands the guards to release Dunk… And they listen.

“You impudent little rat,” Aerion says. “What’s happened to your hair?”

“I cut it off, brother,” Egg says. “I didn’t want to look like you.”

Bum-ba-BUM!

Who Is Egg On A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? He’s Aegon Targaryen

Okay, there are more reveals to come next episode and beyond. But to lay this out plainly, when we first met up with Egg, aka Aegon Targaryen, he was on the run. There’s one aspect HBO has asked us not to reveal that you might be able to figure out for yourself, but we’ll loop back to that at a later date. Regardless, he and his brother Daeron, who we know is a drunk, were supposed to go to Ashford ahead of the rest of the Targaryen party. Instead, they ended up at the inn where Egg met Dunk.

By that point, Egg’s hair was shaved off, in order to hide his golden Targaryen locks, which is why he’s bald. And tempting fate, Egg headed back to Ashford to squire for Dunk. It’s clear he doesn’t like being a Targaryen, and certainly doesn’t like his brother Aerion at all. In fact, this week’s episode he shouted “kill him!” to an opposing knight in a joust.

But to take an even bigger step back, Maekar has a bunch of sons: Daeron (the drunk), Aerion (the a-hole), Aemon (who we have not met but eventually becomes the old maester Jon Snow befriends at The Wall in Game of Thrones), and Aegon. There are also daughters, but whatever man, who cares about daughters.

They all live at Summerhall, and mild future spoilers here as George R.R. Martin’s novellas about Dunk & Egg continue — there are three, with potential plans for more — one could intuit that despite this reveal, Aegon and Dunk still head off together on further adventures. So yes, this is not the end of the line for Ser Duncan the Tall and his tiny squire… Despite the fact that he’s not some bald boy, but actually a Prince of the realm. Which also explains how he knows so much about knights and history, while being unable to do other basic squire duties, huh? Sure does!
