What Is The Largest Comic Book Store In The United States?

Every once in a while, when I’m scrolling through TikTok, I see some influencer post a variation on the same video: “I visited the largest comic book store in the United States!” Without fail, that comic book store they’re visiting is Midtown Comics just off Times Square in New York City. And also without fail, the comments are consistently “that’s not the largest comic book store in the United States.”

…So what comic book store is the largest in the United States, if not the Midtown Comics location at Times Square? Because I can tell you as a regular customer of that location, nothing against the fine people at Midtown: I’ve definitely been in larger comic book stores… Or have I?

The issue is that if you search for largest comic book stores in the US, two outlets immediately pop up: Midtown Comics in NYC; and Mile High Comics in Denver, Colorado. As of this writing, the latter is the first result in Google, though Mile High is “America’s Largest Comics Dealer, with over 10 million comics and over 300,000 Comics Trade Paperbacks and Hardbacks in stock!” That’s not to say there isn’t a fair amount of square footage, but they’re not saying they are physically the largest, just that they claim to have the largest stock.

Where does Midtown get its claim? Mostly from Wikipedia, but the text stating Midtown is the largest comes from a 2012 article in the New York Post, about a special on National Geographic titled “Comic Book Heroes.” Where the Post got that claim… Well, I’ll reference you to the storied history of the New York Post, and you can decide how reliable that is for yourself. It’s possible that like with Mile High, they were conflating Midtown’s multiple locations and warehouse; not the Times Square location itself, which is two sizable but not overwhelming floors.

Speaking of specious, Bleeding Cool posted a list back in 2019 of the 25 largest comic book shops in the United States, online or otherwise, that might possibly, maybe, sell the most comics (at least at the time). That has nothing to do with physical size of the shops, but rather was based on one month of sales of Marvel Comics. While it certainly provides a snapshot of buyers, using it as any measure of “largest comic book shops” based on physical size — or even stock — just doesn’t seem accurate.

…But to give BC some credit, it does provide a nice checklist of major comic book chains and outlets in the US. So using some of that data there, I decided to reach out to as many shops as possible to find out what is actually the biggest comic book store in the United States.

Okay, first up, let’s check those Midtown Comics stats. I reached out to the great Gerry Gladstone of Midtown, and he told Comic Book Club that, “Our suppliers tell us we’re the highest volume comic book retailer in the U.S., so in that respect Midtown is the largest but I don’t know about physical size and we’re too modest to try to compete in that area.” He did note that the Times Square location is 5,000 square feet (since it’s a duplex), and the other locations — Grand Central, Downtown, and the Astoria outlet — have somewhere around half that. So total you’ve got approximately 12,500 square feet, which is pretty sizable.

Similar in size, at least if we’re talking individual locations, is the Northeast chain Newbury Comics. They’re sort of an all-purpose store that arguably is better known for being a music store and sort of high-end Hot Topic at this point than actual comic books. They have a massive 29 locations, and though they did not respond for comment on this article, their location in the Walden Galleria in Buffalo, New York, is 5,200 square feet, while the location in Braintree, Massachusetts is “nearly 10,000” square feet. It’s likely that if you add all them up, Newbury Comics is bigger than Midtown Comics — but without exact data from the company, we can’t say for sure (though probably yes, let’s be honest).

Smaller by far is New York’s Forbidden Planet, which has extremely tall ceilings, but “only” comes in 3,400 square feet.

Now, let’s throw a dark horse (not to be confused with Dark Horse) contender on there: Third Eye Comics. The chain has six locations throughout Maryland and Virginia, but the largest is the store in Annapolis. Steve Anderson, one of the two founders of the chain, told Comic Book Club, “Our ANNAPOLIS location is the largest, and technically: it’s more than just comics, not sure if that impacts – it’s a combined total of 25,000 SQF.” A quick check of the Third Eye website shows that Annapolis Comics and Annapolis Games share Suite 200, while Annapolis Music and Video is at Suite 300 at the same address. So yes, as Steve notes there are other things than comics — but that’s probably okay, since most stores these days are a combo of comics, toys, and other accessories, right? Right.

Interestingly, there is a comic book store that claims to be second to Mile High Comics, but technically has fewer square feet than Third Eye, our current champion. That would be Galactic Comics in Florence, South Carolina. In a 2022 article on WBTW News13, owner Dale Poston trumpeted that they have “14,200 feet of retail space. We’ll probably have 10,000 toys in here, 125,000 comics.” While the headline of the article claims that Galactic is the “2nd-largest comic book store in the U.S.,” Poston only notes that, “Mile High is the largest comic shop in the country. They’re located in Denver, Colorado, and people travel to Denver just to go to Mile High. My goal is to become a destination spot.”

In case you’re curious if anything has changed since 2022, as of December 23, 2025, they still claimed to be “one of the largest comic shops in the country” in a Facebook post. So there you go!

But all those dwarf in comparison to Lange’s Comics, Cards & Collectibles in Michigan. As owner Todd Lange confirmed to Comic Book Club, their store is 27,000 square feet. So surely even with a scant 2,000 square feet over Third Eye Comics, Lange’s is the biggest comic book store in the United States, right?

Well… No. While Mile High did not respond to multiple requests for comment for this article, they do list their Denver Mega-Store as encompassing a whopping 45,000 square feet. If that’s true — why no response, Mile High, what are you scared of??? — then Mile High is, indeed, far and away the largest comic book store in the United States.

So there you go, TikTok-ers… Next time you tape a video about visiting the largest comic book in the United States, you better make sure you’re in Denver.
