‘Fallout’ Season 2 Reveals Another Video Game Legend In A Surprise Role

Fallout Season 2 walton goggins the ghoul

Another week, another surprise video game legend in a surprise role on Prime Video’s Fallout. Spoilers for Fallout season 2, Episode 7 “The Handoff,” but right at the closing minutes of the episode we got a brief appearance by none other than Clancy Brown as the U.S. President.

To be clear, this is the President before the Great War in the flashback sequences that take place in 2077. In the scene, Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins) has decided to trust Representative Welch (Martha Kelly), who he believes is the one good politician who can help him save the world. She sets up a meeting with the President in Vegas, and Cooper hands over the cold fusion he stole last episode from Young Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan). And we get a quick shot of Brown as the otherwise unnamed President, accepting the cold fusion.

Meanwhile, in the “present” — i.e., 2296 — Cooper returns the cold fusion to restart the computerized version of Robert House (Justin Theroux) which is booted up in House’s old office in New Vegas, while Lucy (Ella Purnell) discovers the still living severed head of Welch in a vault at the bottom of the Vault-tec “office” in New Vegas… On the latter, it’s not immediately clear what’s happening, but it seems like the mainframe that is keeping Hank’s brainwashing machines going is actually the still-living head of Welch. Meaning Lucy will need to make a decision to kill a person to revert everyone to their normal selves, or let Welch live, and live herself with the knowledge that Hank is going to destroy the world. Uhoh, Trolley Problem!

That’s neither here nor there, though, because there are two aspects of the Clancy Brown reveal we need to discuss. The first is that this is actually the second time Brown has been involved in Fallout. In fact, Brown voiced Rhombus, a head paladin for the Brotherhood of Steel waaaay back in the original game in 1997.

By the way, if you’re wondering where you know Brown from, the answer is far too many roles to recount them all. But recently he played Sal Maroni on HBO’s The Penguin, was Captain Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, or you might recognize his voice as the legendary Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob.

The other thing we need to discuss? This is the first time in anything Fallout we’ve seen the President, and Cooper made a bit of an oopsie. While it’s possible Welch might be trustworthy, the President is not: he’s a member of the Enclave, the organization that is likely responsible for the end of the world. So to draw a few lines here between various plotlines on Fallout, Cooper gave the cold fusion to the President, who gave it to the Enclave, which is how it ends up in Siggi Wilzig’s (Michael Emerson) in the first episode of the series, aka the thing that kicked off the action of the show.

Whether we’ll see more handoffs happen in next week’s season finale? TBD. As for now, welcome back to Fallout, Clancy Brown. Hope you survive the experience.
