In a bit of “perfect casting is perfect,” the Fallout TV series on Prime Video just revealed an iconic video game voice in a live-action role that makes so much sense, it’s dumb it took nearly two seasons for it to happen. Spoilers past this point but in Fallout Season 2, Episode 6, “The Other Player,” actor Ron Perlman is playing a super mutant.
You likely know Ron Perlman from his live-action work as Hellboy, or in Pacific Rim, Sons of Anarchy and dozens of other films. However, Fallout fans know him better as the narrator of Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout ’76 and Fallout Tactics, as well as other voices in the franchise. He’s also known for the intro to the intro, the line: “War. War never changes.”
Perlman has a very different role in the live-action TV show, though one that fits pretty well with his Hellboy past. In the TV show (and games) Super Mutant is a capsule term for anyone hit with what’s called the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). They come in a ton of varieties, but are regular humans mutated through experiments, either by West-tek or The Enclave, or someone else.
We don’t find out a ton about Perlman’s super mutant, who doesn’t even have a credited character name, though he does save The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) from reverting to his subhuman state while impaled on a pole in New Vegas. At first, The Ghoul thinks the super mutant is going to do something horrible to him, but in fact, he heals The Ghoul, and monologues while he does.
“They call us abominations,” says the super mutant. “But they created our kind… Ghouls, mutants, we’re kin. And we should unite against our common enemy. The [grow] us to the point of extinction, and forgot we ever existed. But we didn’t forget them. The people who set all this in motion. The Enclave.”
In case you missed last week, it’s pretty clear that Fallout is setting up the fascist shadow government as the big villains of the series, the ones behind everything including the end of the world. The Ghoul, though, says he works alone — and wants nothing to do with the bubbling war.
“Uh-huh,” says the super mutant. “And how’s that working out for you?”
The Ghoul explains he’s only alive to find his family, with the mutant continuing, “Well then, you’re going to need friends. But if you won’t join our kind, then you can’t know where we live.”
The super mutant then knocks him out, and that’s it for now… But it’s likely not the last we’ve seen of Perlman. I mean, come on: Superman hasn’t said his stupid line yet.
