As of last night (January 18), we have some new Game of Thrones heroes to root for, thanks to the premiere of HBO‘s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Specifically, on the series premiere we meet Ser Duncan The Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire, Egg (Dexter Soll Ansell). And of all the burning questions out of the episode, one burns brighter than the rest: which is better, Dunk and Egg, or Dunkin’ Egg?
That might require a little explanation, so here goes: a few years back, the coffee and donuts chain Dunkin’ released a series of little egg bites. While I called them — and still call them — Dunkin’ eggs, their actual name is Dunkin’ Omelet Bites.
Anyway, that’s all the explanation you need, so let’s jump into breaking down which one is better, based on science.
1. Which Is More A Part Of This Complete Breakfast?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, despite depicting many delicious looking foods for Dunk to eat over the course of the premiere ranging from succulent duck to some delicious looking tarts, is not a food item. That makes the HBO series extremely hard to eat. And while it will certainly nourish your mind and heart, consuming an episode of the TV series for breakfast won’t fill you up for the day.
On the other hand, while arguably not the most wholesome thing you can eat (according to the US government, that’s a pint of beef tallow), the Dunkin’ Omelet Bites are still a better choice for breakfast. According to some data available online for the Bacon and Cheddar Omelet Bites, two bites — the serving size — have 280 calories, 19 grams of fat, 185 mg of cholesterol, 520 mg of sodium, 7 g of carbohydrates, 0 g of fiber, 2 g of sugar, and 17 g of protein. They’ve also got Vitamin D, Potassium, Calcium, and Iron.
Other than if they stabbed you with a sword (aka iron) you’re not getting any of that from Dunk & Egg.
Winner: Dunkin’ Egg
2. Which Is The Better Pair?
As mentioned earlier, the Dunkin’ Egg came in Bacon and Cheese, or there’s another option, Egg White and Veggie. Dunk & Egg only come in one variety, which is themselves because they are humans… That said, both Dunk and Egg are hiding some secrets; while the Dunkin’ Egg is hiding bacon bits and cherry tomatoes, so they’re even there.
However, there is one aspect that helps our Westeros heroes pull ahead: the pair of Dunkin’ Egg bites are the same in both cases. Meanwhile, Dunk is dumb and tall, while Egg is short and smart. Overall, the latter are much more interesting and cute to see together than two Omelet Bites, which are visually the same and have the same personality. I mean, recipe.
Winner: Dunk & Egg
3. Which Is More Visually Appealing?
This is an easy one. Though the official shots of the Dunkin’ Egg look pretty good, as you might imagine in reality they look SUPER gross. Rather than the puffy light bites Dunkin’ wants you to think they are, they’re actually over-cooked, concave microwaved eggs that taste like virtually nothing and look like less. If you have any experience with Dunkin’s eggs in general, you know what to expect here. Now imagine them without sausage, cheese, and a croissant to hide them and mask the dull taste, and you have the idea.
On the other hand, Dunk is oafishly handsome and Egg is tiny and adorable. I would much rather look at Dunk & Egg than Dunkin’ Egg, a dish that screams “okay, it’s almost over.”
Winner: Dunk & Egg
4. Which Is More Successful?
So, I know I’ve been pretty harsh on the Dunkin’ Egg so far, and that’s not going to stop any time soon. Particularly because the menu item was reportedly discontinued about a year ago — first the veggie ones, then the bacon ones. It’s a bit of a bummer because many folks with dietary issues could only eat the egg white veggie bites from Dunkin’, versus other menu items. But c’est la vie, they are deader than the Night King.
On the other hand, even before it premiered A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was renewed for a second season by HBO. So merely on virtue of that, Dunk & Egg win again.
Winner: Dunk & Egg
Overall Winner:
There’s no contest here… Despite being more edible by far, Dunkin’ Egg is the clear loser of our tourney. Dunk & Egg, on the other hand? Westeros runs on Dunk & Egg.
