PSA: ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Is An HBO Comedy, Like ‘Sex and the City,’ Not an HBO Drama, Like ‘Game of Thrones’

If you’re getting psyched for the new HBO Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, well… Get psyched. But also, you might need to change your expectations a little bit, because despite existing in Westeros like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, it’s very different than both of the parent series. That’s because A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms isn’t an HBO drama… It’s an HBO comedy.

To be clear, there’s plenty of drama and horror to be had here; this is Westeros after all, not Candyland. But HBO has a pretty regimented broadcast structure for its TV shows, and you may notice something odd about the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms time slot. Unlike Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, it’s not broadcast Sundays at 9pm ET / PT on HBO, and streaming at 9pm ET on HBO Max. Instead, it’s premiering on Sundays at 10pm ET / PT.

Why does this matter? It’s because, like I said, Sunday 9pm ET has been, for decades now, the premier drama slot for HBO shows. They also sometimes come on Mondays at 9pm ET, but that’s usually reserved for the second rans, or shows that have yet to build a following. Think how Gilded Age and Industry both ran under the radar on Mondays until they moved to the prime Sunday night slot that’s been home to True Detective, The White Lotus and many more. And usually, those one-hour dramas are followed at 10pm by one or two comedies, in the 10pm and 10:30pm slot, respectively.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as mentioned, is in that 10pm slot… But it’s not just filling up another hour: it’s also, get this, about 30 minutes long per episode for the six-episode first season. And also, without spoiling anything? It’s pretty funny.

So consider this your PSA: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is an HBO comedy, not an HBO drama. House of the Dragon will premiere later this year, so there’s plenty of dark tragedy coming your way from Westeros. But for now? Have a fun time, for 30 minutes, at 10pm ET on Sundays. Because A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is basically the new Dream On.
