The Hijack Season 2 premiere is here on Apple TV, and if you thought you knew what was going to happen on the episode, titled “Signal,” well… You thought wrong. Spoilers past this point, but Sam Nelson (Idris Elba) has gone from hijacked to hijacker in the second season. Twist!
In case you’re not caught up, Sam is a high-end business contract negotiator who managed to negotiate his way out of a complex plane hijacking in Season 1. As Season 2 begins, we see Sam reluctantly getting onto a subway train in Berlin. That’s not too different from how we found him in the first season, aiming to reconnect with his estranged wife Marsha (Christine Adams). Here, he’s seemingly in Berlin trying to track down John Bailey-Brown (Ian Burfield), the surviving mastermind behind the plane hijack from Season 1.
Meanwhile, we’ve got a mad bomber on the loose, and a conductor who seems to be sweating profusely. Looks like Sam is about to get caught in another hijacking he’ll have to somehow talk his way out of. He certainly seems to be monitoring the situation throughout, and we’re meant to think it’s him being hyper-aware after the first attack, and taking out potential threats. Perhaps given how he was instrumental in shutting down the first hijack, this hijack is targeting him, specifically… But that’s not what’s happening at all.
What is happening, we’ll have to wait and see as most of the premiere is setup, including focus on the control room for the U-Bahn (the Berlin subway), and an investigator looking into a potential bomber, as well as the feint that our focus is on the conductor, not Sam. We also get a contact in the government who is supposed to help Sam find Bailey-Brown, and thanks to his absence is running into some problems of her own. And also we meet multiple train passengers who likely will be important later. Meanwhile, Marsha is… Wandering around the woods? More on that to come.
But in the closing minutes of the premiere, just as we did with Season 1, we finally pull back the envelope on the secret plot the season is hiding. First, the conductor blasts past a station instead of being relieved of his duties. Then the runaway train goes off track, almost literally. Sam goes to the conductor’s booth, tells him to open the door, and when he doesn’t, Sam uses a key to open the door.
“What the hell are you doing?” Sam says. “You’re going too fast. Slow down.”
Sam continues to shout at the conductor, they wrestle for the controls, and the train smashes into an under construction tunnel, with the U-Bahn control room losing track of the subway. Off the grid, the subway slows to a halt.
“Why were you driving so fast?” Asks the injured conductor.
“You don’t understand,” he answers. “There’s something going on.”
“I know,” Sam says, keeping the conductor from leaving the booth, explaining to the nervous driver that he took care of the police (by giving them a false hijacker).
Sam knows the driver — Otto — and he tells him to listen to him.
“I’m hijacking this train,” Sam says.
Uh-oh, spaghetti-os! So that’s where the episode ends. As to why Sam is now the hijacker? And what this means for the rest of the season? We’ll just have to stay tuned as 2 Hijack 2 Furious continues.
