‘The Pitt’ Timeline: When Does Season 2 Take Place? And How Much Time Has Passed Since Season 1?

The Pitt is finally back on HBO Max for Season 2, and a lot of time has passed since the harrowing extra-long shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center in Season 1. But how much time has passed since Season 1, particularly given some big changes for the characters on the show? And when does Season 2 take place? They’re both pretty straightforward answers, but we’ll put a spoiler warning for The Pitt Season 2 premiere here anyway.

Let’s get the easy one that you likely picked up on out of the way, first: The Pitt Season 2 takes place on July 4. Just like in Season 1, the sophomore season of the streaming series will take place over 15 hours in pseudo-real-time. The shifts in the hospital are supposed to last 12 hours, but in Season 1 everything got extended thanks to a horrific shooting at a Pittsburgh music festival. Season 2 is also supposed to go 15 episodes… We’ve only seen nine of the 15 episodes (read our The Pitt season 2 review for more on that), so we don’t know for sure why the extra three hours are there… But there are some very, very strong hints, particularly at the end of Episode 9.

That’s a long way to say that The Pitt Season 2 takes place over a very busy July 4, with all the hot dog overeating and fireworks disasters that implies. The funnier answer is due to the probable timeline of The Pitt, this takes place on July 4, 2026, meaning Season 2 takes place in THE FUTURE. Will we see flying cars? TBD.

The slightly less clear question, which is somewhat underplayed in the premiere episode, is how much time has actually passed between seasons.

How Much Time Has Passed Since The Pitt Season 1 And The Pitt Season 2?

We do have a rough sense of how much time has passed since Season 1: 10 months. However, part of the “problem” — if you can call it that — is that we don’t know exactly when Season 1 took place. We know that it happens on the anniversary of the death of Dr. Robby’s (Noah Wyle) mentor, Dr. Adamson, who passed away five years earlier due to COVID in 2020, setting the season in 2025. We also know that Dr. Adamson died in September, and a calendar in the hospital break-room also places the action in September.

Furthermore, The Pitt sleuths have discovered that Dr. King (Taylor Deardon) mentions the shift is happening on a Friday, and Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball) says it’s an “odd” day. Which means if this happens in our reality, the action of Season 1 is either on September 5, 2025, or September 19, 2025.

Season 2, meanwhile, is squarely set on July 4, 2026, so is either almost exactly 10 months later, or 10 months and two weeks later. That little span of two weeks doesn’t really matter, because the main reason for setting it on this date — other than the “fun” possibilities of July Fourth disasters — is that’s the amount of time Langdon needs to be released from rehab and allowed back to work. It also gives enough time for Whitaker (Gerran Howell) to be promoted to doctor, Robby to set up his three-month motorcycle sabbatical, and perhaps most important to me, personally, nurse Dana (Katherine LaNasa) to decide maybe she doesn’t want to quit after all as she did in the Season 1 finale.

There are also plenty of romantic entanglements that will crop up throughout the episodes (subtly; this isn’t Grey’s Anatomy) that have had time to develop in the intervening months, which couldn’t have happened if Season 2 took place a day after Season 1.

So there you go! 10 months have passed since Season 1, and it takes place on July 4, 2026. Now you can finally enjoy The Pitt season 2 in peace.
