Who Is Macaulay Culkin On ‘Fallout’? What To Know About Caesar’s Legion

Macaulay Culkin in Fallout Season 2

One of the biggest questions about Fallout Season 2 has been the identity of Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin’s character on the series. It was surprising enough that Culkin broke his self-imposed exile from acting for the show, though he’s taken on a few more roles here and there as of late. But appearing in the Prime Video hit seemed like it might be a return to prominence for the child star. Well, thanks to the premiere of Episode 3, titled “The Profligate,” we finally know who Culkin is in the world of Fallout. Spoilers past this point, but he’s credited as Lacerta Legate, part of Caesar’s Legion.

Potentially that raises more questions than answers, particularly since Lacerta Legate is a completely new character for the season and not one who has previously appeared in the Bethesda video game series. He’s also not technically named Lacerta Legate. In the continuity of Fallout, “Legate” is a title that denotes the second-in-command in Caesar’s Legion. Several characters held the title in Fallout: New Vegas, which introduced the concept of Legates — and the faction if Caesar’s Legion — including Joshua Graham, the first Legate, and Legate Lanius.

However, again, neither of these characters are Culkin’s Lacerta, who also seems to be a soldier in a separate faction of the Legion that’s different from Caeser’s Legion. Part of the reason for that? New Vegas takes place in 2281, while the TV show takes place in 2296. So if you can’t do the quick math, this is 15 years after the events of the game, and a lot has happened since. What has happened since? Well, I’ll tell you.

Caesar’s Legion Is Actually Two Legions (And It’s Pronounced “Kai-Czar”)

After getting captured by The Legion last episode, Lucy (Ella Purnell) is taken before their new leader, with Lacerta getting his own hero shot. Lucy of course tries to talk to Caesar, with Lacerta asking how she dares address the “kai-czar.” Lucy notes that “Kaiser is German, and you have more of a Roman theme,” but the group is non-plussed by her (correct) historical facts.

In fact, they want to negotiate Lucy’s rights to primae noctis, which is usually referred to as “prima nocta,” and is the ruling lord’s right to have sex with a new bride on her wedding night. Unable to stop herself, Lucy explains that prima nocta isn’t a Roman tradition, it’s from the Middle Ages. So basically, the Legion isn’t doing a great job of staying on theme.

They don’t love it, and decide to tie up Lucy — Lacerta keeps calling her “profligate,” which is direct from the games and also sort of a misused word which usually refers to a drunken lout — explain that they’re at war with everyone… Most of all the “unrepentant” members of Caesar’s Legion… Who are camped in a parallel camp just over the hill.

That’s when Lacerta fills in some of the historical gaps. “The great founder of this Empire? He died. We’ve been at war ever since over who should be his heir.” The camera shows Caesar’s skeleton (or what we’re supposed to assume is Caesar’s skeleton, he is a skeleton, after all), and Lacerta continues, “He wrote down the name of his successor, and placed it into his divine pocket.”

Here, we see a hand-written note that says “IAM” and then on the next line “IAM + I” (or what looks like that, it’s sort of hard to see).

“But every time we try to retrieve it,” Lacerta continues, “false Caesar and his followers, they shoot at us. We are at a stalemate.”

Lucy offers to help with conflict resolution, and Lacerta smiles, making you think that maybe Lucy is gonna help solve this problem. Instead, they crucify her.

She gets rescued of course, thanks to The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), who trades the location of the New California Republic for Lucy’s life. He also starts a civil war between the two factions of the Legion by blowing up the Caesar mound in the center, leaving them to fight it out to the death.

So is that it for Caesar’s Legion, Legate Lacerta, and Culkin? I mean… Probably not. Mild non-spoiler, you won’t find out what happened to the Legion (or Lacerta) in the first six episodes. But it seems crazy to think they won’t play into the finale somehow, and there’s even a shot of Culkin in the season trailer that wasn’t in this episode, so all signs point to “yes.” We’ll certainly see as the season progresses. Just remember: it’s pronounced “kai-czar.”
