New ‘Jonah Hex’ Series Coming From DC Comics

Jonah Hex DC Comics

Here’s a fun little surprise for you all right at the end of 2025: seems like DC Comics will be publishing a brand new Jonah Hex series as part of its upcoming Next Level initiative.

The news comes via the latest edition of Scott Snyder’s newsletter, which is worth reading in full. But I’ll pull out one particular paragraph from the letter, where he talks about next year’s Next Level, which is part of the mainline DC Universe and allows writers and artists to take big swings with their dream properties. We already know that Skottie Young and Jorge Corona are on Lobo, Greg Rucka and DaNi are on Batwoman, and Tony Fleecs and Carmine Di Giandomencio are on Deathstroke: The Terminator. We also know that Joshua Williamson will taking on Legion of Super-Heroes, though that hasn’t officially been announced so much as said out loud on panels and teased heavily.

There are other creative folks involved, and other characters teased, but let’s get to the paragraph in question:

I can’t wait for you to see these books. I mean, all of them are really creator forward. They’re real big swings, Lobo and Deathstroke. They’re big over the top epic books. Batwoman, real, real great swing by Greg Rucka and Dani. Zatanna really levels Zatanna up. Firestorm and Shadow of the Bat. I mean, there are just so many good ones. There really are. Legion of Superheroes and Jonah Hex and there’s just a ton coming that we can’t wait for you to see.

We have already heard about The Demon, Firestorm, Barbara Gordon (the Shadow of the Bat title), Zatanna, and Teen Titans coming from the Next Level initiative. But the scarred Western bounty hunter Jonah Hex getting his own title is news (to me, at least). In fact, the last time Jonah Hex headlined a title was in 2011, when the 70-issue series was canceled (after a graphic novel one-shot was released), and replaced as part of the New 52 by All-Star Western. That title did still feature Jonah Hex, and ran 34 issues. But whatever way you slice it, it’s been well over a decade since we’ve gotten a Jonah Hex comic.

So who will be writing this? And who will be drawing? Creatives announced for Next Level who haven’t had a title publicly assigned to them yet include: Jeff Lemire, Javier Rodríguez, Jamal Campbell, Mariko Tamaki, James Harren, Kyle Higgins, Daniele Di Nicuolo, Michael Walsh, Rafael De Latorre, Amancay Nahuelpan, and Deniz Camp.

Lemire and De Latorre are working on some secret DC project together, though it looks based on one scant page like a spy thriller, versus a Western. For my money, I’ll throw out there that James Harren and/or Michael Walsh might meld the best with Jonah Hex’s sensibilities, though I could see Mariko Tamaki tackling his tales, as well. But on the same note, a version of Jonah Hex was recently pulled through time to the present over in Justice League Unlimited… So maybe this isn’t a cut and dry Jonah Hex riding through the Old West title after all.

That’s all the news we got on this one at the moment. But with Next Level launching in March 2026 after the conclusion of DC K.O. we should know more sooner, rather than later. In the meantime: Happy New Year! And here’s to twenty twenty Hex.
