‘Fallout’: Turns Out, Aliens Exist… And Nobody Cares

There’s a lot going on in the world of Prime Video’s Fallout, between the post-apocalyptic wasteland, nearly immortal ghouls, armored armies, and flashbacks to the retro-future world that kicked it all off. And as of Season 2, Episode 2, “The Golden Rule,” you can add another wild element into the mix, and spoilers past this point: aliens exist in the world of the series… But also nobody cares.

In the hour, while Lucy (Ella Purnell) and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) are off fighting the awesomely named radscorpion, Maximus (Aaron Moten), who is 5′ 11″ tall according to his IMDb bio*, and the Brotherhood of Steel take over Area 51 as their new base. The main thrust of the storyline is that Elder Quintus (Michael Cristofer), who I once hung out with backstage at a Mr. Robot event during New York Comic Con and it was very cool, is trying to cause an uprising against the Commonwealth, aka the folks who run the larger organization the Brotherhood of Steel is part of.

However, the thing I would like to talk to you about today is the funniest moment in an otherwise pretty serious episode of the series. As the Brotherhood arrives and does inventory of the abandoned hanger, two of the Brotherhood discover an alien, frozen in a refrigeration unit.

“Holy s**t,” says one of them, as the scene reveals the alien icicle. After a pause for comedic effect, he knocks the alien on the floor, presumably breaking it into a million pieces. “A real f**king icebox!”

That’s the whole thing, and it is pretty funny… But for the casual viewer (read: me) you may be wondering why everyone is so offhand about aliens. That’s because, yes indeed, aliens do exist in the world of Fallout. And these aliens are called Zetans. And nobody really cares they exist.

What To Know About Zetans In Fallout

Most of the time in the video game series the TV show is based on, alien encounters are also brief, and involve crashed alien crafts and/or dead alien carcasses. The aliens are the Zetans, who are pretty close to your typical Little Grey Men, but not quite. It’s hard to tell on TV from the alien’s frozen state, but the Zetans have yellowish skin, longer-than-human bodies, and larger heads.

While not exactly what we would think about as aliens, in the games the Zetans eat alien worms and alien squids. And in Fallout ’76, a Zetan shows up in a glowing purple helmet as The Flatwoods Monster; so while not another type of alien, this is another thing the Zetans do. The more you know!

The Zetans are also seen as skeletons in the first Fallout game, and in a decomposing state in Fallout 2. What the Zetans are doing is TBD, though there are multiple little Easter eggs and sundry folks in the Fallout universe who are are way more invested in the existence of aliens than our hapless Brotherhood of Steel dudes, who are more stoked for a fridge.

Will the Zetans have a more prominent role to play on the Fallout TV show? Probably not, as sort of the whole joke is that they’re there, but don’t really matter to the story. But hey, who knows? We’ll find out more — possibly — as Fallout Season 2 continues.

*I don’t know, people were searching for “Aaron Moten height” today so I figured I throw it in there. If you are searching for “Aaron Moten height” and this is how you found out? You are welcome.
