Miss Truesdale and the Rise of Man #1 is in stores now from Dark Horse Comics. The series reunites write Mike Mignola with lauded artist Jesse Lonergan. And if you’re in awe of Lonergan’s art — as you should be — we’ve got an exclusive look at his process on two pages, as well as insight from Lonergan himself.

In the four issue series, Mignola returns to the world of Miss Truesdale, a Victorian lady who is thrown back in time to her past life as an ancient gladiator. Now, Anum Yassa — the gladiator — “wanders the forest in search of answers about her past, present, and future lives – only to discover a dark entity on her trail and threatening all of mankind.”

You can read Lonergan’s commentary on pages 6 and 7 of the new issue, below. And click the images for larger versions.

“The idea for this sequence was that as Anum Yassa wanders through the forest, we get flashbacks (or flashforwards) of other lives she’s lived. Instead of separating the flashbacks out, I like the idea of them being incorporated with Anum Yassa’s present, so that they sort of blend together the way the present and memories blend together in our minds. I also liked using the shape of the panels themselves to convey the idea of wandering across the pages. It took a bit of fiddling in the thumbnail stages to figure out how to get the movement to work. I also brought in the little forest guy trailing Yassa as she goes through the woods in the bottom tier of panels across both pages. Color was really important in making this sequence clear and readable, the green of Yassa’s time popping out against the more muted and monochromatic flashbacks.” — Jesse Lonergan
