Of all the form IT takes in IT, IT: Chapter Two, and IT: Welcome to Derry, including Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skårsgard), there’s one that’s more powerful than all the others. That’s when Pennywise opens his mouth wide and releases the Deadlights. And — spoilers past this point — in this week’s episode of Welcome to Derry, Pennywise deploys his ultimate weapon twice. But what are the Deadlights?
Simply put… They are IT. The Deadlights are depicted in the movie and TV series as three floating orange-ish lights, usually seen swirling around in the back of Pennywise’s throat once he unhinges his jaw. And again, in the movie and show, once someone sees the Deadlights they are immediately frozen and begin to slowly float in the air. In IT, Beverly Marsh (Sophia Lillis) gets hit with the Deadlights and is floating in Pennywise’s lair comatose until she’s kissed by Ben Hanscom (Jeremy Ray Taylor). In Chapter Two, Richie Tozier (Bill Hader) is briefly Deadlight’d during the final battle with Pennywise, only to be saved by Eddie Kaspbrak (James Ransone).
Meanwhile, this week’s Welcome to Derry, titled “The Black Spot,” managed to double the number of Deadlighted individuals. First, Ingrid Kersh (Madeleine Stowe) gets hit with the Deadlights once she realizes Pennywise is not, in fact, her dear papa Bob Gray (also Skårsgard). And then at the end of the episode, poor Will Hanlon (Blake Cameron James) gets the Deadlight treatment after the US military pulls a Watchmen.
To get back to the subject at hand though, the Deadlight are IT, in the purest form of the creature. Every other aspect from that gross moose a few episodes back, to Pennywise himself, are at their core the Deadlights, an eldritch energy of pure evil. There’s a lot more to it in Stephen King’s oeuvre. But the important thing for Welcome to Derry is that when you see the Deadlights, you’re pretty much gone until someone brings you back. In the books, they can kill instantly, or drive one insane. In the movies and shows it seems less dire than that, more of a Ghost Rider penance stare that Pennywise deploys as a last resort.
So what does this mean for Ingrid and Will? In the former’s case, she certainly doesn’t seem to be in her right mind when she’s taken away by medical professionals midway through the episode. We know that in Chapter Two, IT takes the form of older Ingrid; but we don’t know what happened to the real one. Perhaps she’s back in Juniper Hill, this time as a patient instead of a nurse? And as for the latter, well… He’s probably going to be fine. Mainly because unless there’s some big twist here, Will has to live so he can have a son named Mike, who will go on to destroy Pennywise forever in 2016.
We’ve got one episode to go, and we can’t wait to watch. The show. Not the Deadlights, that would be bad.
