Stephanie Phillips has been on a heater lately. First, the writer nabbed the plum gig writing Daredevil for Marvel. And now, Grim, the BOOM! Studios series she co-created with artist Flaviano, is being developed by the dudes behind the massive Netflix hit Wednesday as an animated series for Netflix.
First debuting in 2022, Grim is about a woman named Jessica Harrow, who is a Reaper — aka in charge of harvesting souls and taking them to the afterlife. However, she can’t remember who she was before she died, and in her search for answers she’ll uncover secrets about the afterlife — as well as about herself. So you can see why Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the guys behind Smallville as well as the Addams Family adaptation, would be so into this.
“Grim has meant so much to me and to everyone who’s worked on it,” said Phillips via a press release. “To see it take on new life (pun intended) as an animated series with Netflix is beyond exciting, and I can’t wait for fans, new and old, to step into Jessica Harrow’s world with us.”
Gough and Millar will work with Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who previously was Supervising Director of Love, Death + Robots to adapt the series, which concluded its run earlier this month with Grim #25.
Phillips and Flaviano will Co-Executive Produce the series, which will be EP’ed by Millar, Gough, and Aaron Schmidt for Millar / Gough Ink., Stephen Christy and Adam Yoelin for BOOM! Studios, and Mette Norkjaer Co-Executive Producing. Nelson will also EP.
Since it’s early in the process, there’s no premiere date or cast — or even guarantee this will make it to series (see Something is Killing the Children, which was in development for years, and has now landed at Blumhouse instead of Netflix). But no need to be grim… Congrats to the team!
