IT: Welcome To Derry has a bad habit of ending with cliffhanger reveals that, in the context of the show, may or may not make a lot of sense to newer viewers. A few episodes back, they ending on a stinger involving a car full of skeletons. This week’s episode — spoilers past this point — ended with the reveal of a spooky house. Oh no! A house! Well, it’s actually a pretty important house to the mythology of IT: the Neibolt House, aka the house of Neibolt Street, aka the Well House.
But what is it? What does it mean? Why is this house important? And perhaps most importantly, how is it just as decrepit in 1962 as it is in the 1980s and 2016, as seen in IT and IT: Chapter Two? Don’t worry, we’ve got a simple explainer here about the ending on IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 4.
IT: Welcome To Derry Episode 4 Ending Explained: What Is This Old House?
A good chunk of the last 15 minutes of this week’s fourth episode, titled “The Great Swirling Apparatus of Our Planet’s Function,” is spent with Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk) psychically torturing the Native American Taniel (Joshua Odjick) to find out about the origins of Pennywise (Bill Skårsgard) — and more specifically the location of what they call the “weapon.” By the end of the episode, Hallorann believes he’s discovered that location — or rather the entrance to the tunnels that will lead him to 13 pillars which keep Pennywise trapped in Derry: the broken down house on Neibolt Street.
While you usually get a big character reveal at the end of an episode, the house is a character in and of itself, having recurred in every iteration of IT in this new Warner Bros. continuity. So presumably now that the US Army knows about the Neibolt House, that’s where they’re heading to capture Pennywise next episode. TBD, though!
What Is The House On Neibolt Street? What To Know About The Well House:
If you’ve seen either IT or IT: Chapter Two, you’re likely very familiar with the house of Neibolt Street. In the Stephen King novel the movies are based on, the old house is the place the Losers Club first fights Pennywise in 1958. The movies expanded on that, and made it a key, central location to the mythology.
So in the first movie, same as in the novel, the kids decide to stand up to Pennywise and track him to the house. There, the kids are terrorized by various visions caused by the monster, before fighting back — and injuring him for the first time. However, the house’s importance doesn’t stop there… It was built on a well (hence calling it “the well house”) which serves as an entrance to the sewers and therefore Pennywise’s domain. While there are other sewer entrances throughout the town of Derry, this is the framed as some sort of more direct way of getting to Pennywise’s lair. I don’t know, I just work here.
In It: Chapter Two, the adult Losers head back to the house of Neibolt Street to once again enter Pennywise’s lair and fight him for the last time. And this is speculation, but there’s a possible explanation for why the house has stayed equally dilapidated over the course of over 54 years in IT: Welcome to Derry, through IT: Chapter Two… Once the Losers destroy Pennywise in the second movie, the house collapses into a crater. So it’s fair to speculate that the house isn’t really a house at all, but an extension of Pennywise. Perhaps that’s something Welcome to Derry will delve into more next episode? We shall see!
