For months now, writer Stephanie Phillips has been teasing a dream job at Marvel, and it looks like we finally know what that is… Starting in March, Phillips will take over Daredevil for Marvel alongside artist Lee Garbett, for a new Daredevil #1.
“I’m taking on one of my favorite characters with one of my favorite artists, and together we’re exploring Daredevil’s noir sensibilities,” Phillips said via press release. “Lee Garbett brings so much style and emotion to every page, and I couldn’t ask for a better partner to bring this version of Daredevil to life.”
Added Garbett, “I couldn’t be more excited to be working with Stephanie Phillips on Daredevil. We came into the project together, with a genuine love of the character and a clear vision for the book. Steph is an incredible writer and has absolutely nailed the tone and heart of Daredevil’s world. Every beat feels authentic and DD at its purest – but we’ve got fresh ideas and some big surprises in store!”
The previous team on Daredevil was Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, who wrapped up their run with Daredevil #25 in September — so there’ll be about a six month gap between runs. Also of note? This marks the first time in almost four decades that a woman has been the main writer on the Matt Murdock Daredevil title, after Ann Nocenti’s lauded, influential run from the ’80s. Recently, Erica Schultz wrote an (excellent) run on Daredevil: Woman Without Fear, focusing on the Elektra version of the characters, as well as Daredevil: Unleash Hell, also focused on Elektra, another excellent miniseries.
…And of course, you can’t have a new #1 without so many covers. Following Marvel’s first experiment with “True Believers Blind Bags” on Ultimate Endgame #1, the publisher will be furthering the grift — sorry, gift — with Daredevil #1, which will feature rare variant covers, “ultra-rare one-of-a-kind sketch covers” and more.
