James Gunn floated the possibility of spinoffs of Superman featuring Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) and Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and at least one of those is moving forward, as American Vandal co-creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda have been hired for a Daily Planet focused series that pits the intrepid Metropolis shutterbug against… Gorilla Grodd?
Per THR, Perrault and Yacenda will write, executive produce and showrun the spinoff, which will find Gisondo reprising his role for the series. In addition, other members of the Daily Planet staff will pop up… Though not Clark Kent (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). Are they on assignment? Who knows!
The concept of the series finds Olsen and the Daily Planet taking on stories involving super-powered criminals, with the highly intelligent psychic ape Gorilla Grodd taking the spotlight for Season 1. In the series, he’ll be the ruler of Gorilla City, a secret African hideaway filled with intelligent gorillas. Grodd has been previously seen in animated form, briefly, during the run of Creature Commandos — albeit in a dark, dystopian vision of the future of the DCU.
Olsen also has a history with Gorilla City, including the photographer marrying a gorilla in classic comics, with the plotline returning in the excellent recent series Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen by Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber.
The show will be executive produced by Gunn and Peter Safran, with Gialyin Vaisman overseeing for DC.
