Brian K. Vaughan Has Completed A “Detailed Overview” Of The Final 48 Issues Of ‘Saga’

The ongoing saga of the release of Image Comics Saga has an epic update from writer Brian K. Vaughan: he’s completed a “detailed overview” of the final 48 issues of the series. And not only that, when Saga returns, it will be accompanied by two new projects — one by Vaughan, the other by his co-conspirator and artist Fiona Staples.

The news comes via Vaughan’s latest newsletter, where he explains that, “I’m happy to share that I’ve already written all the scripts for our next arc, and completed my most detailed overview yet of the other 48 remaining issues of Saga. Fiona and I are still 100% committed to completing Hazel’s 18-volume journey to young adulthood, and, spoiler alert, it’s going to be f**king awesome.”

First released in 2012, Saga is the best-selling story of Alana and Marko, two lovers from opposite sides of a galactic war, who have a daughter named Hazel. The story has morphed and changed over time — and much to the consternation of fans, went on a long hiatus after issue #54 was released in 2018. The series resumed release in 2022, and then again halted back in March of 2025 with issue #72. Don’t worry, though, Saga #73 is coming.

“Our upcoming storyline (featuring Hazel’s life-changing journey to meet a relative, Squire’s action-packed adventure at an alien sleep-away camp, and the arrival of an important new character we’ve only glimpsed once before) is my personal high point for our entire series so far, especially our landmark 75th issue,” Vaughan continued. “Fiona said that she absolutely didn’t see the last page of Chapter 73 coming, and I hope that issue’s conclusion will be equally surprising to you.

“So yes, Saga will return in 2026.”

That said, it’s possible that we all may be old and grey by the time Saga #108 (if my math is right, that’s 6 issues per volume for a total of 18 volumes) finally hits stores, as Vaughan also revealed that he and Staples are “separately” been working on “two other top-secret comic projects” for “some time.” What those are, are TBD — but Vaughan explained further on these projects, as well as the delays in Saga, stating, “I know that waiting for new issues is a drag, but like getting to spend time with our real-world families, these other creative pursuits have only enriched and improved our work on Saga, so we greatly appreciate your kind patience, and we’re excited for you to see what else we’ve been cooking up.”

To that I say: let them cook. Saga #73 will hit stores in 2026 from Image Comics. In the meantime, the Saga Deluxe Edition Hardcover, Volume 4 collecting issues #55-72 will be released on April 15, 2026.
